Finally, We Get Some Decent Snow

Hooray! It seemed like it was never going to happen, but finally we have a snowfall we can be proud of. It’s not really all that much snow, but since we haven’t had any measurable amount in a while everybody’s running to the ACME to buy up all the milk and bread.

We’re supposed to get about 1 to 3 inches, with a changeover to rain by late afternoon.

We could get ice, too, making this nighttime just ever so fun. Good thing there’s RPS tonight!

Kids Nowadays Get Day Off At Mention Of Snow

Okay, so there’s not even an inch of snow on the ground and already these kids are getting released from school for the day!

Okay, so it’s mostly the suburban schools. But back in my day, we had to walk uphill through the snow both ways and only got off if there thirty-one feet of snow.

Well, maybe not. But come on, I’m jealous! I miss snow days.

Here We Go Again: Snow!

It’s been a fairly mild winter. Sure, it was freezing last week, but in early January it was in the 50s at least most days. And we really haven’t had any snow, not much more than a dusting in the city.

And, as such, the local meteorologists are doing their best to hype every single possible snowstorm that comes into the area. For example, right now on NBC 10’s homepage the ’snow flurries move into area’ story leads over the murder-suicide with four dead. Yeah, that’s how much we love the weather.

But, yeah, we’re going to get like 1-3 inches, along with some Wintry Mix™ coming down later. Let’s see if the local news can hype it any more this time.

Update, 10:10 a.m.: The snow started earlier! Which means… could this be the big one? Well… no. 2-4 inches north and west of the city, but still going to change over to rain in the city.

Wait, this is really what was predicted?

120605snowhydrant.jpg On the radio, they’re saying that in many neighborhoods today it looks like a Christmas card. I don’t really know what that means, but the snow did end up falling — starting up in the evening last night — and Philadelphia officially got four inches of snow at the airport.

That was about what everyone was predicting. It’s not enough for a snowman and just enough for a snowball fight. But, once again, I wonder: all of this hype for four inches of snow? Watching the news yesterday you’d think we were getting a 30-inch blizzard. Waking up to KYW 1060 this morning they were already talking about “the next snowfall on Friday.” Woohoo!

So, you know, enjoy the nice day — temperatures in the 30s, so sunny you have to wear sunglasses, etc. — because, you know, the hype about Friday’s super storm should start on about Wednesday or so. And the pattern repeats…
