Your Grandmother Got Rickrolled

This is at yesterday’s Macy’s Day Parade. I have no idea why anyone would have been interested in some song about imaginary friends, but in the middle of it Rick Astley comes out and you know the rest. The best part is the announcer at the end: “That was Rick Astley singing the rickrolling phenom ‘Never Gonna Give You Up.’”

I look forward to the Goatse float in the New Year’s Day Parade, or maybe Barack Obama will get in on the Internet meme fun: “Now that I have just been inaugurated as president, let me say: All your base are belong to us.” [via]

Eagles To Play Thanksgiving (Will You See It?)

Well, look at this! The Eagles will play on Thanksgiving night this year at home against the Arizona Cardinals. In addition to their division games and the four games against the rotating AFC opponent (this year, the North, where they’ll play the Steelers, Ravens, Bengals and Browns), the Eagles will also play the 49ers, Falcons, Seahawks, Rams and Bears.

But the Thanksgiving game might be the most interesting, and just because it’s on, well, Thanksgiving. The NFL and Comcast are still having a tug of war over what “tier” the NFL Network should be on, part of the most boring controversy in world history. (I just love it when multi-million dollar corporations fight.) Now, Comcast’s home market of Philadelphia has a high-profile game that will be airing on NFL Network! What better way to shame them (or something) into doing their bidding. That crafty NFL!

Media Still Reporting On Vince Papale

Fear not, soldiers getting ready to head off to war! Some lawyer and some Jefferson Hospital spokesman are serving you dinner! For some reason, KYW 1060 pairs this like a Wunza movie (e.g. “One’s a cop. One’s a crook. When they get together, hilarity ensues!”):

He’s the president of the Camden County Bar: “When we are at war, whether we like the war or not, we support our troops.”

He was portrayed by Mark Wahlberg in the movie Invincible: “Whether you believe in what we’re doing overseas is right or wrong, you have to believe in these men and women because they’re laying it on the line for us.”

For our soldiers already overseas, we’re doing something even nicer: Sending them Nintendo Wiis. Don’t send them Manhunt 2, though; we don’t want to turn our soldiers into killers.

Reason #7 To Love Philadelphia: Dann Cuellar

In some other dimension, Dann Cuellar’s job is to sit in a recording studio and say things like “Meanwhile, back at the hideout.” Fortunately for us, we live in this dimension, where Cuellar’s job is to go out on the street and cover stories. (Hopefully, one day he’ll cover something about a crime hideout, too, and then he’ll be the new announcer for a new Untouchables series.)

Cuellar’s big story each year is, apparently, to cover the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Rather, he does a preview of the 6 ABC-sponsored parade each November. And according to an Action News executive producer, Cuellar and photographer Yuri [x] “start brainstorming about their parade preview months in advance and they spend many weeks putting it together.”

Why do this extensive preview on the parade every year? (Well, besides the fact 6 ABC sponsors it.) Why not spend almost seven minutes — perhaps the longest Action News report ever — on investigating crime, or a report on the city’s hippest bloggers?

I think the video speaks for itself.

God bless you, Dann Cuellar. We are all now totally into the Christmas spirit.
