Phillies Score 10 Safeties!

Phillyskyline’s Brad Maule sends along the above photo of Mayor Nutter celebrating Chase Utley’s three-run homer last night in the first inning. The Phillies fell behind by three runs early last night, but then went on a 20-2 run to obliterate the Rockies, 20-5.

The Phils scored 15 on Sunday in a 15-6 comeback win over the Astros and have improved their Pythagorean (expected) record by a ton (and their regular record by two wins also). Last night, the Phils scored 20 runs despite dealing with the menace of his-and-hers Chase Utley jerseys.

Burrell Finally Proves Model Correct!

050308cbpmodel.jpg

Hey, remember this? The above CG image was the model of Citizens Bank Park, created before the stadium even had a corporate sponsor — hence the blue logo for the stadium’s name. If you look on the big screen you’ll see the phrase, “HOME RUN, Pat Burrell! PHILS WIN!”

Well, Pat Burrell never had a walkoff home run in Citizens Bank Park; he hadn’t had a walkoff homer since 2002. Until last night, that is. The Fightins trailed by a run on an Aaron Rowand homer in the top of the 10th, but Burrell won it with a 3-2 line drive homer into the left field seats.

Frantic Final Minutes Of TU-SJU

Hey, I know not everyone who reads this blog is a sports person, but above is the last three minutes and change from last night’s Temple-Saint Joseph’s game at the Palestra. It’s everything the best Big 5 games at the Palestra are like. Although the shorts are longer now, basketball games like this have been a part of the Philadelphia landscape for over 50 years. The Liberty Bell? Puh-leeze. Give me this any day.

Although, to the Temple kids: Storming the court? I dunno, I hate complaining about that because I feel like an old man and I’d have stormed the court, too.

Hey, The 76ers Are Still Winning Games

Look! The 76ers beat the Suns for the first time since Dolph Shayes was on the team (or maybe since just 2002), in a 119-114 thriller last night out in Phoenix. Andre Iguodala had 32 points, including this half-court shot at the buzzer of the third quarter.

Our local hoopsters are currently 7th in the Eastern Conference and could really go as high as six. (This would allow the Sixers to avoid the Celtics or Pistons in Round 1, meaning they might win a playoff game or two.)

Editor’s Note: And if you’re reading this on the front page, you can apparently win a suite for a 76ers game, according to the ad at left. (I didn’t know, but that’s some nice synchronicity.) Neat!
