Curby Bucket And An Army Of Recyclers

070808curbybucket.jpg

This clip from the 4th of July parade is strangely mesmerizing. First there are prison guards, then a fire truck, then a seemingly endless parade of recyclers, who do a dance with their official City of Philadelphia recycling bins.

Then Curby Bucket — the official mascot of recycling, who is called “Kirby Puckett” several times by the hosts — comes out and stands there or something.

Redlasso video after the jump. (Found this on the Redlasso RSS feed; if it’s from some blog just let me know and I’ll link it.)

Finally, A Holiday We Can Really Celebrate

070708bindependenceday.png

The 4th of July? Eh. Today we get a holiday we can really be proud of, thanks to Mayor Nutter.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter will issue a “BINdependence Day” Proclamation to approximately 200 city youth, junior block captains, community members and dignitaries. The City of Philadelphia has declared July 7, 2008 “BINdependence Day” to mark the completion of the expansion of single stream recycling for the City of Philadelphia. Residents all across the city will now be able to put all recyclables into one bin - any bin.

Yes, happy BINdependence Day, Philadelphians! Nutter’s release says he’ll be at Dilworth Plaza at 2 p.m. Truly this is a holiday where we should be shooting off fireworks like the world has never seen. I wonder if BINdependence Day is always going to be July 7 or if it’s always the Monday after the 4th. More importantly, I wonder if we’ll get off for it next year.

Leftovers: Recycle, Beautifully

• Article of the Day™: This New York Times piece about the word slut. Apparently, “Like ‘queer’ and ‘pimp’ before it, the word slut seems to be moving away from its meaning as a slur. Or is it?” One day, I hope to be able to write an article with a paragraph that profound. [NYT]
