Imp’t Historical Site To Be Discussed

Comcast-Spectacor will unveil preliminary plans for development of the South Philadelphia sports complex — including issues regarding the demolition of the Spectrum — today at a news conference. The news conference by Comcast will be broadcast on Comcast SportsNet, which you can only get in the city by subscribing to Comcast cable. The media will then write about Comcast afterward.

Early last week, the Delco Times broke the story of the Spectrum’s possible demolition, leading locals to reminisce about their favorite Spectrum moment. Some of we yokels probably even would say “Wing Bowl” when asked their favorite Spectrum event. Indeed, the Spectrum has been home to many events, none greater than Bill “El Wingador” Simmons’ first Bowl victory in 1999.

The plans involve the Baltimore-based Cordish Co, which has opened several “Live!” entertainment chains in the U.S. and wants to open its newest branch down in South Philly. I think the conference is at 2 p.m., but Peter Lukko isn’t going to say anything concrete, so whatevs.

Jesus Himself To Attend Million March 4 God

Well, I broke my rule. Yes, I traveled more than two blocks to cover an event. But this was no ordinary event. This was the press conference for the Million March for God.

I’m relatively sure I was the only member of the news media (”news” “media”) at the event, though there were three cameras and one of them could have been filming for one of the local TV stations. Nonetheless, there was a good-sized crowd at the National Constitution Center auditorium, because a group of schoolkids from Washington DC private school were brought to fill in seats, which one of the speakers called a “miracle.”

Despite the strong language on the event’s website, most of the speeches at the event were mainly about vague (but good) concepts like health, education, welfare (the noun, not the program). There was no mention of modern medicine.

Harassment, A $500 Appearance Fee And Queena Bass: The Tommy The Loan Shark Press Conference

I’m not quite sure I can explain what just happened.

When Milton Street sang while draped over a coffin, it was clearly the zenith of civilization. It was, therefore, rather easy to write about it. (Plus, Jess Fuerst had video.)

The Tommy the Loan Shark press conference originally scheduled for yesterday was rescheduled for 1:00 today. Naturally, I went over, since I always like to keep up with the anthropomorphic mascot news. (Also, this blog needs a little diversity from Barbaro, Milton Street and Kerri-Lee Halkett.) But also there were a number of political reporters for major local media outlets, i.e. actual political reporters. Dave Davies! Bruce Gordon! KYW 1060! WHYY-FM! (To note: Josh Cornfield from Metro had a cover story about Tommy the Loan Shark (aka TLS) in the paper today.)

The political reporters knew what they were doing, though, since the presser ended up being the greatest press conference of all time (non-Milton Street/John Chaney division).

Fear & Loathing At Wendy’s

042507fallen.jpg

Aww, remember just a few weeks ago when Dwight Evans and Tom Knox were thebest of pals? They’d sit on the swings together, drink lemonade and occasionally challenge Bob Brady’s nominating petitions. (Brady’s officially on the ballot now, by the way.)

Well, all of that is over. Yesterday, Dwight Evans held an anti-Knox press conference, attacking Knox on his lack of public safety credentials. The theme for the day was “Where’s the beef?” For those of you who don’t remember the 1980s — and, really, there’s not much there to remember except for that last Police album and The Legend of Zelda — “Where’s the beef?” was a Wendy’s ad campaign which was popular enough to get its own Wikipedia page and its own novelty single. The phrase was later used by Walter Mondale in the 1984 democratic primary to attack Gary Hart.
