LA Will Do

Ah, the scenic LA River. Beautiful, ain’t it? My apartment is literally across the street from this strange abomination of concrete and nature. It runs 52 miles through the Valley to Long Beach, cutting off roads and forcing drivers to take alternate routes. It’s just one of the many weird things that make LA LA.

I get asked a lot what LA is like compared to Philly. Which is funny, because when I hear people say they’re from Peoria or Billings or whatever, no one is dying to hear about what life is like there. But there seems to be a genuine curiosity about Philadelphia as a city that I can’t quite explain. People want to know about it.

Philly Ranked Among Other Cities In Lists!

Work time-waster alert: City-Data.com has lists of the top 101 cities ranked in just about everything.

• 51.3 percent of the population smoked 100+ cigarettes in their lives (really?)
• The suburbs do well in people who drank in past 30 days
• The 19106 zip code has the fourth-most museums in the United States among zip codes (whee!)
• The 19103 zip code has 403 law offices
• Wildwood has 161 motels and hotels, apparently the most in the nation (again, really?)
• Philly is in the 25th-worst shape
• And, finally, look at Polk, Pennsylvania, where 55 percent of the residents are in a home for the mentally retarded (apparently)
