Frank Rizzo Pushes Anti-Nepotism Bill, Sun Explodes

Frank Rizzo — the current City Councilman, not the late mayor — is introducing a bill in City Council limiting nepotism.

Frank Rizzo, you may know, appointed his brother Joe as fire commissioner when elected mayor in 1971.

Rizzo Jr. says his new bill would place strict limits on the hiring of relatives: “They’re going to have to disclose that they are a relative of Councilman So-and-So, or Commissioner So-and-So.” He’s also going to have to change his name to “Francis Smith” just to make sure nobody thinks they’re voting for the ghost of the former mayor.

Shocker: Politician Gets People He Knows Jobs

The Inquirer reports today that, despite signing a pledge planning to get nepotism out of politics, Bob Brady’s family members already have a bunch of jobs in politics.

Well, no shit. A politician getting people he knows jobs? Stop the presses! Brady’s wife has a job with a firm that has a city no-bid contract to deliver notices from lawsuits. His brother’s a judge, which doesn’t really count, his son works for the turnpike commission and his daughter works for the lottery. But, well, not all of those jobs are all that good:

As for Brady’s daughter, Kimberly Marie Eager, 32, she was hired in 2005 by the lottery as a district lottery representative at an annual salary of $35,638.

Thirty-five thou? That’s it? That’s nothing. Want to know how low it is? It’s only three times what I make! I’d expect the chairman of the Democratic City Committee to be able to get his daughter a better job. I mean, clerical work can pay better than that, right?
