The Federal Gov’t Just Isn’t As Awesome As It Once Was

The caption from Shorpy, emphasis mine: “Helen represented the District of Columbia as Miss Washington in Atlantic City and, as Miss Treasury Department, led a fashion revue in ‘Uncle Sam’s Follies,’ a musical put on by federal employees.” Whichever candidate brings back Treasury Department beauty pageants and government employee musicals will get my vote.

Philly Soul Exist, Are 8-0

Get this: The Philadelphia Soul are still undefeated with an 8-0 record, a game better than also-undefeated Dallas. For those of you not familiar, the Soul are Philadelphia’s Arena Football League team owned by Bon Jovi. (Duh.) They also prevent a problem to writers who aren’t sure whether the name should be treated as singular or plural (either way it sounds weird, I’m sure I’m doing it wrong no matter what).

The Soul actually play the Dallas Desperados on Monday night at the Spectrum for sole possession of first place in the Eastern Division. (No, I don’t know why Dallas is in the East in Arena Football.) And Miss America, the President of Women, is going to be there!

And get this: Apparently, the Soul have drawn over half a million fans to watch its games in the first four years. Judging by how Philly sports have been going recently, though, the Soul will probably lose the battle of the undefeated teams on a bad call from the ref.

Miss Pennsylvania Pride!

Have you been watching TLC’s Miss America reality show? No? Why not? It’s 52 young babes living in a house in preparation for a beauty contest! What more enticement do you need?

Anyway, I hadn’t been watching it either, until a friend notified me of Miss Pennsylvania’s mishap on a recent episode. As part of a challenge, contestants had to jump over equestrian hurdles and put together a map of the United States. So far, so good; and Miss Pennsylvania’s team is in the lead! Unfortunately for Miss PA (one Rachel Brooks), she had a little trouble finding the state flag. Judging from the video, she may still be there looking for it.

Video: Bill Henley’s double entendre

The second video of today is a bit of an old one, but since I finally got everything set up, I figured I’d pass it on. A few weeks ago my friend and local quizmaster, Johnny Goodtimes, happened to co-host the NBC mid-morning talk show, 10! I recorded it, and as such caught this moment.

He and co-host Bill Henley interviewed Miss America Jennifer Berry. She was showing off her crown, and the box her crown came in…

If you listen closely, you can hear crew members laughing after Henley says his unintentional one-liner.
