Mexico Declares War On Emo

The above video appears to be some sort of declaration of war on emos in Mexico. Apparently in Mexico instead of sitting back and tolerating annoying subcultures, they destroy them to a bloody pulp.

According to Daniel Hernandez, who’s been covering the anti-emo riots on his blog Intersections, the violence began March 7, when an estimated 800 young people poured into the Mexican city of Queretaro’s main plaza “hunting” for emo kids to pummel. Then the following weekend similar violence occurred in Mexico City at the Glorieta de Insurgents, a central gathering space for emos. Hernandez also reports that several anti-emo riots have now also spread to various other Mexican cities.

Forget Canada. If Walnuts McCain wins the presidency, I’m moving to Mexico. And if you’re wondering, the emos are fighting back.

‘DN’ Continues Coverage Of Ivanka Trump’s Boobs

Ivanka Trump

The Daily News‘ Dan Gross continues his coverage of all things Ivanka Trump- and boob-related with another lead item about the Wharton grad’s chest. You may remember back last month when Gross reported Ivanka Trump’s boobs were much bigger at the Golden Globes than the last time he saw her. She reportedly got implants in Mexico.

Donald Jr. was on John DeBella’s 102.9 WMGK morning show yesterday and lashed out at reports about his sister’s breast implants, Gross reports:

“Don’t piss off an overprotective brother… If you don’t want me to explode, you better stop with the Ivanka questions.”

Oh snap! After Donald Jr. declared the breasts 100 percent real, Gross called up Ivanka’s publicist, who gave this quote from Ivanka: “Completely false. The only thing I do in Mexico is build buildings.”

Hmm. That really wasn’t a response I was expecting. Did you get breast implants? No, I build buildings!

Leftovers: 150 Gone From ‘Inquirer’?

• Steve Volk reports today that Inquirer editors have been asked to prepare for 150 layoffs. Pretty soon, the daily Inquirer’s going to replace “Saturday Daily News” in that old joke. (Bonus full letter from Tom Ferrick hoping to calm the storm here at Phawker.) [PW]

• Gretchen Wilson is coming to town this week. And what do country stars do when they come to a town like Philadelphia? That’s right: They perform — on ice — with six-time U.S. skating champ Todd Eldredge. Way to subvert those stereotypes about the North and South, fellas. [KYW 1060]

• An ad attacking Republican State Rep. Gene DiGirolamo attacks him for voting with President Bush 95 percent of the time, including a vote in 1998. Campaign literature scheduled to be handed out at the polls tomorrow will tout how DiGirolamo’s in agreement with Herbert Hoover 95 percent of the time. [Bucks County Courier Times]

• Oh, yes, before I forget (again): Kate Kilpatrick, erstwhile (for now) A&E editor Kate Kilpatrick is blogging from Mexico. Yes, yet another PW blog for you to read instead of mine. [Queso Fresco]

Better Dead Than Rojo

There was an article yesterday in the Inquirer about a local man, John Ryan, who runs a local chapter of the Minutemen. The Minutemen, if you didn’t hear about them from your local friendly right-wing radio nut, are a loosely-affiliated group of gun-toting civilians who police the U.S.-Mexican border in search of illegal immigrants. I’m not quite sure who, exactly, the Pennsylvania chapter is keeping out — maybe those fishy Canadians swimming over into Erie? — but Ryan is heading down to the U.S.-Mexican border soon to do some policin’.

While the U.S. Border Patrol abhors their presence, and some members of the group are racists, for the most part the group — and Ryan and his Pennsylvania chapter, which isn’t affiliated with the main Arizona Minutement — is just shedding light on the problem with America’s open border, and if we can engage them in discussion, perhaps we can come to some sort of solution that can benefit us all.

Ha ha! Just kidding! John Ryan thinks that immigrants sneaking into the U.S. are here in search of reclaiming the Southwestern U.S. territories won from Mexico in the 19th century, as opposed to coming to the States to actually earn some money or start a family or be terrorists, or any actual reasons people come to the U.S. illegally. Reclaiming the Southwest United States for Mexico sounds about as far-fetched as thinking The Note and the Washington Post are in some sort of conservative conspiracy to fool the public into thinking the media is liberal.

But I digress. Ryan, though, is nowhere near the person with the zaniest ideas in Inky article. That would go to Kathleen Appell, who supports the Minutemen cause.

Kathleen Appell, 62, a Minuteman donor, recounted seeing men advertising a Mexican restaurant while en route to a July 4 barbecue in Southampton.

“There are these Mexicans with sombreros, dressed in Mexican outfits,” she said. “It was an American holiday. I felt like I was in another country. How did this neighborhood change so fast … that there even is a Mexican restaurant?”

Oh no! Mexican restaurants! Sombreros! Pretty soon it’ll be the United States of Mexico! Whatever shall we do? Better fence the border! Keep your sombreros and your tacos offa my flag!

NBC 10 goes after coveted ‘bored stoner’ demographic

An interruption for cuteness (and seriousness)

122105puppies.jpg For most of us, we don’t really form a strong opinion on something until it affects us personally. I mean, we may all think that the Darfur genocide is a horrible, horrible event, but it’s not really on many radars. We may not really care about tsunami and hurricane rescue until those huge disasters hit. And who could forget how the United States’ policy on Osama Bin Laden changed after 9/11 — from not capturing him to… well, okay, maybe that last one is a bad example.

My views on U.S.-Mexico border relations were changed today when a friend notified me of this puppy-smuggling story in the Los Angeles Times. There is a big puppy-smuggling ring in Mexico, that brings cute-but-sick-and-not-properly-vaccinated puppies from Mexico and sells them in the U.S. to unsuspecting owners. Doggies can die within a week after coming home!

All of this, of course, makes me sad, even if it’s those effing ugly pugs dying. Because puppies aren’t made to die! And, I mean, sure, there are the liberal upbringing guilt about looking the other way for honest, hard-working Mexican workers — but there’s no silver lining about these puppies. Grr.

Anyway, thankfully, the U.S. government is actually doing something about it; namely, forming a task force:

On Nov. 15, federal agents searching a Honda CR-V at the Otay Mesa crossing found 16 undeclared puppies in three cages that were covered by blankets and boxes of laundry detergent. The suspect, a Mexican woman with an animal cruelty record, allegedly told investigators she needed the money and had lots of orders to fill.

The Border Puppy Task Force formed last year after a spate of complaints from brokenhearted owners who reported their dogs were turning sick and often dying. They were getting socked with thousands of dollars in veterinarian bills. Common diseases include distemper, rabies, parvovirus and ringworm.

Aww! The Border Puppy Task Force! Who’s a good U.S. government form of border protection? You wanna get the ball? You want the ball? Awww go get it!

Err, sorry. Anyway, they didn’t arrest anyone, but a whopping 362 puppies under three months old were found from Dec. 5 to Sunday. And Philadelphia Will Do is coming out strongly against puppy brutality, even if it produces the cutest press conferences in the history of press conferences.
