Liveblogging Eagles-Redskins

Donovan McNabb was benched. The Eagles were 5-5-1. The best team in the NFL, the Giants, loomed after the Thanksgiving game against the Cardinals.

But then McNabb’s wife had twins, and the Eagles are undefeated ever since. Combined, the twins have 21 receptions for 336 yards and 5 touchdowns, and one of the toddlers even scored a touchdown out of the Wildcat formation.

Everything has fallen in place for the Eagles; with Tampa Bay’s loss to San Diego today, if the Eagles win today and next week against Dallas, they make the playoffs. Today, the Eagles play at Washington. Let’s liveblog this. More »

Inquirer Really Going All Out On Mendte Coverage

Update, 3:15 p.m.: Silent for 8 minutes!! Larry Mendte must have hacked the account to prevent it from updating anymore.

Update, 3:16 p.m.: Phew, back!! The tension there was so palpable I need to get a drink.

Update, 3:50 p.m.: “Mendte gets 3 years probation, 6 months home confinement, 250 hours community service, computer monitoring plus a fine.” Ha ha, computer monitoring!

Liveblog: Phillies Go For Sweep

The Phillies play the Mets today at 1:05 today at the Bank. The Phils have won the first three games of the series and outscored the Mets 16-6 to boot. That the Phils have only given up six runs — and the bullpen has been scoreless — is exactly the reason why they get our hopes up every year around this time.

Well, consider me fooled again. I’ll be keeping an eye on the game after the jump this afternoon. Haw, haw.

Liveblogging Nutter’s Victory Speech (Late)

My times are going to be off, since I’m watching it online, but whatever.

11:04 - Nutter informs us we’re going to have a tomorrow. No world destruction tonight, sweet.

11:07 - Nutter thanks his volunteers and calls them “Nutter Butter volunteers.” Then he thanks his daughter Olivia, who won him the election and who better get her allowance raised tremendously.

11:08 - Great election blah blablablabla.

11:10 - Nutter says there’s still an election and he has to beat mighty Al Taubenberger in November. Then he says let’s have the most rip roarin’ kegger in city history. Huzzah!

11:12 - The WHYY panel is incredible, they all seem to have that great love/hate relationship with the city. Meaning: They hate the city. This is great.

Road To 10,000 Losses: Phils Go For Six

Road to 10,000 Losses is a countdown to the Phillies’ 10,000th loss, coming sometime later this year. With a five-game winning streak, the Phillies still stand at 9966 losses, only 34 away from 10,000.

The Phillies have been on a bit of a tear recently, winning five straight and improving their record to 9-11. They’ve hit six homers during the streak and the much-maligned bullpen has a 1.38 ERA during the last five games. Morning Glory fan Chase Utley went 5-for-5 last night.

Now, these wins have come against three subpar teams, the Reds (2), Astros (1) and Nationals (2). But, hey, a win’s a win, and the Phils have five games left in April to attempt to get to .500.

The Phillies go for a series sweep and third-straight series win (duh, they already won the series) with 23-year-old Cole Hamels on the mound, who had 15 strikeouts in a complete-game win last Saturday.

Philadelphia Will Do Productivity-Lowering Until-The Battery-Runs-Out NCAA Tournament Round 1 Spectacular

As you may know, today is the first day of the first round of the NCAA Tournament. And right now I’m pretty much feeling like the man in the photo at right, whose picture I grabbed off the television after Oral Roberts won its conference title.

And, as such, I am at a bar with a couple of friends, ready for an orgasmic delight of hoops. If you’re wondering, yes, this is basically a scam so I can watch the NCAA Tournament while at work. Eat it, suckers! Maybe you should have gone to Vegas and eventually got a job blogging because of an email you wrote to your friends afterward! Anyway, if you are stuck at work, my guide from last year should still apply, including March Madness on Demand. (You can watch the games on your computer!)

Liveblogging Excitement From ‘Inquirer’

Another day, another Inquirer blog. Their newest — and shortest-lived, it seems — blog is The Count in Chester County, which began yesterday as a way to chronicle, uh, the re-count in Chester County. It’s written by political reporter Carrie Budoff.

Please try to contain your excitement.

Beginning Monday, the 156th district was led by Republican Shannon Royer. But with the vote now official — when something’s liveblogged, it’s official — Democrat Barbara McIlvaine is the state’s newest elected official. This flips control of the House from red to blue and, as Budoff helpfully noted, “The whole Republican crew immediately bolted from the building.”

To recap: The state house is now Democratic (barely) and the Inquirer doesn’t have to launch a new blog again for 15 days.

Liveblogging Mariano, OMG!

The good boys over at the Inquirer — I guess it’s the Inky, though some DN people seem to be involved, too — have been doing blog updates during the Rick Mariano trial, and it’s actually quite good and a wonderful use of the Internet, something they seem to have a problem with over there at PNI. (Also, uhm, PW did this too, albeit with Beanie.)

The details so far: The jury has been selected — it took one-and-a-half days — and there are five women and seven men, nine whites and three blacks. Mariano is charged with takine $30,000 in bribes, which I thought was legal in politics, but apparently it’s not. Mariano’s lawyer — who has been speaking for him except for cries of pain when he’s hit by a gate — claims the media, the feds, the mole people, the mafia and the World Wrestling Federation are all attacking a nice man who has done nothing wrong except maybe love puppies too much.

The opening statements are/were this afternoon. I’ll be trying to write a morning wrap each day from now on, but the guys who make double what I do are doing a fine job, too.
