Mayor Finds Way To Watch ‘Wire’ For Free

NUTTER

Now that The Wire is ending and everyong is letting you know they watch it so they seem so hip, urban and cultured — and ‘cuz it’s a good show, no doubt — it’s obvious Michael Nutter is going to get in on that action. He’s holding a screening at City Hall on Sunday for the show’s finale. He also got HBO to sanction the showing, so he’s not committing piracy like we’re warned not to on so many FBI and INTERPOL bulletins we can’t fast forward through on some DVD players.

“As a fan, it’s tremendous,” said Nutter. “I want to say thank you to HBO for responding.” Oh, yes, benevolent HBO, allowing this free publicity and endorsement from the mayor of a major American city. The final episode of The Wire airs Sunday at 8 p.m.; you can win tickets for the City Hall screening through a couple of newspapers.

What’s excellent is how angry people are. Oh, wait, it’s the Internet, that’s why things are always excellent. The comment on the Daily News story is angry; the comments on Catherine Lucey’s blog post about it yesterday were angry. Hey, it’s Sunday night at 8. What else is Nutter gonna be doing?

Just Wait ‘Til The Christians Attack ‘Weeds’

Joe Murray is one of the Bulletin’s more rational columnists, perhaps the only one. He’s a conservative, but unlike other Bulletin columnists, he writes an argument and tries to convince you of his point. Shocking, I know.

Still, there are times when it seems like he hasn’t quite done all of his homework. For example, yesterday he wrote a column about Bill Maher making fun of Catholics. Apparently, Maher made fun of Catholics on his HBO show and they (and other Christians) are such an oppressed group they can’t do anything about it.

Or can they?

Christians constitute over 80 percent of the American population and could potentially have a great amount of influence over Maher’s advertisers.

Yes, I am sure Home Box Office is really worried all of Maher’s advertisers are going to flee.

HBO Getting A Little Desperate For Viewers

Ha, HBO! I won’t fall for your chalk marketing on 11th Street for your upcoming TV show John From Cincinnati!

Oh, wait, I guess I just did. Dammit!

Comcast Customers Forced To Switch To Digital If They Want To Watch ‘Dave’ For The 75th Time

It's not analog cable, it's HBO

Comcast customers without digital cable — clearly, people who live in the draconian time of 1997 and don’t have to deal with that horrible Motorola DVR box (although the latest firmware update may have fixed it) — are now faced to deal with a choice: Upgrade to digital, or miss The Sopranos.

The Inquirer reports this comes after Comcast previously upset smaller groups of older peopel by shifting some Catholic network (EWTN) and C-SPAN2 to digital-only.

A decision to move EWTN and C-SPAN2 to Comcast’s digital tier late last year caused an uproar at Pennswood Village, a Bucks County community of 450 people over age 65.

“Pennswood was up in arms,” said Alice Garr, chairwoman of the village’s ad hoc TV services committee, which was formed solely to deal with the issue.

Indeed! Meanwhile, some man is angry he already pays $83.50 for regular cable on three television sets, which means his deal is way better than mine, apparently.
