Clear And Eminent Danger

061406sexoffender.jpg Over the river in Barrington yesterday there was a contentious community meeting about an issue that kinda-sorta had residents a little upset. The county had was housing registered sex offenders in a motel near a school.

Now, you might be thinking, “But, isn’t it good to have all the sex offenders in one place so you can keep an eye on them?” Uh, maybe. But it’s understandable that the residents were a little peeved that the county was housing homeless sex offenders in hotels, and then ignoring a law passed by the City Council essentially forbidding the practice.

Action News‘ Dann Cuellar, however, lets us know that the residents were more like soldiers at the recent meeting:

Residents in Barrington showed up en-masse and they were ready for war if council did not take action against convicted sex offenders who are homeless and are being placed by Camden County at the Barrington Motel on White Horse Pike.

For two years now, residents have expressed outrage upon learning the county was placing homeless convicted sex offenders at the Barrington Motel which is near an elementary school. For two years they’ve been raising cane with borough council. [...]

In addition, Tuesday night, council unanimously voted to use imminent domain laws to take possession of the Barrington Motel along with four other properties and plans to demolish them for re-development purposes.

Raising cane! Ready for war! Sounds like changes were imminent last night!

Lead of the Week

The first sentence of an editorial in today’s Northeast Times about eminent domain:

When the Bush Supreme Court aborts Roe vs. Wade, many state legislatures may feel compelled to reinstate the right to have an abortion.

Okay guys, I just really have to ask: What the fuck?
