City Councilman Loves Coldplay

Late Friday afternoon, Mayor Nutter attempted to sneak the list of mayor’s box attendees at the sports complex from Oct. to the end of 2008 past everyone. Ooh, tricky tricky!

Yours truly will not fall for such Friday news dumps, however. And so I downloaded the full list of attendees. It was pretty boring, actually; just pages and pages of empty listings for Phantoms games, lots of tickets going to the Democratic City Committee and every Disney on Ice show with a box that’s completely full.

Of everything, though, this stuck out:

Looks like Bill Green and his wife just can’t get enough of that Coldplay! Hmm. I’ll give him a pass this time, but if he’s caught attending another disappointing Brit band that’s a worse version of late U2/early Radiohead…

City Council Is Like The Internet

Where can you find people who treat things like the closing of a cheesesteak shop with all the intensity one might find at the Battle of Guadalcanal? Right: The Internet. But you can also apparently find them in City Council.

Yesterday, At-Large City Councilman Bill Green wrote a hilariously serious letter to the Daily News titled “cheesesteak in society.” In the letter — about the booting of Rick’s Steaks from the Reading Terminal — he wrote that “people entrusted with preserving public assets apparently abusing their positions of authority to advantage their friends and associates.” He also noted that he went to grade school with Rick Olivieri.

Councilman Frank DiCicco wasn’t having any of it, firing off a letter (and CC:ing City Council and the mayor) telling Green: “I read with interest your letter in today’s Daily News and continue to marvel at your inexperiences, your political naivete and your inability to see an issue for what it truly is.” He also accuses Green of “merely attempting to grand stand and gain public notoriety.”

And then, at the end of the whole hilariously over-the-top letter, he writes this:

In closing, I have earned a reputation of being one of the most level-headed members of Council. I am proud of my ability to build consensus because I treat each member, whether freshman or veteran, with the respect he or she deserves. Unfortunately, with you, I have reached the end of my rope and would strongly suggest that you alter your tactics and tone.

You really need to read the whole letter. As you can see, it is certainly nice and level-headed.

Tom Knox To End Tradition Democratic Politics In This City By Endorsing, Uh, Sharif Street

Tom Knox, the candidate who’s positioned himself as an outsider, as a guy who’s going to end the no-bid contracts, the insider deals, reform the democratic machine and make his mother proud has corraled his team who he wants on City Council.

It includes three current councilpeople — one who is responsible for the bill which would require tour guides to be licensed, another who had is responsible for the the bill boycotting Don Imus, and another who is Jannie Fucking Blackwell — as well as a plagiarist, the son of a former mayor and, of course, the son of the current mayor.

The release, from yesterday:

PHILADELPHIA – [Today], Democratic mayoral candidate Tom Knox will announce his recommended ballot for Philadelphia City Council. All candidates supported by Knox are committed to putting an end to pay-to-play politics in Philadelphia.

Invited to attend: Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, Councilman Juan Ramos, Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown, Vern Anastasio, Cindy Bass, Bill Green, Cecil Hankins, Matt McClure, Matt Ruben, Sharif Street

Indeed! I can’t wait for Mayor Sharif Street in 2014.
