Canseco, Someone To Fight In A.C.

Former roidhead and baseball star Jose Canseco is looking for someone to box him in Atlantic City, Dan Gross reports. I believe this is all the sport of boxing really needs to get back in the public eye again!

Those wishing to fight Canseco — at the Atlantic City Surf’s park, no less — are encouraged to email fightcanseco@aol.com, where your message will be sent back in time to 1996 when (1) people used AOL and (2) a boxing match with Jose Canseco might seem interesting.

Whoever fights Canseco gets a cool five grand.

Cecil Fielder To Manage A.C. Surf

The Atlantic City Surf’s manager from last season is now a part-owner of the team, and so the team knew there was only one man who could lead the Surf to the championship: Cecil Fielder.

The robust slugger, who hit 51 homers in 1991, managed the Charlotte County Redfish last year and moves up to the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball team this year. (The team is no longerin the Atlantic League with Camden; the Battle of the Atlantic City Expressway is no more.) He’s also the dad of 2006 NL Rookie of the Year Prince Fielder!

“I’m excited to join the Surf organization,” Fielder said in a release, because he certainly wasn’t going to be disappointed to get a new job. “This is a great opportunity, and we’re putting together a team that will give one hundred percent every night. I’m looking forward to managing in such a strong baseball area, and we’re working to bring another championship to Atlantic City.”

The Surf previously employed Mitch Williams as a pitcher/manager; it seems unlikely Fielder would be called on to pinch hit, but we can hope. (Here’s a photo of Cecil now.)

Things must be going better for Fielder nowadays. It is not always a man who lost his fortune gambling takes a job in Atlantic City.

AC Surf Going To Pay Your Tolls, Kinda

The Atlantic City Surf, formerly the chief rivals of the Camden Riversharks in the battle of the Atlantic City Expressway, open up the season on May 26. For some reason the team put out a press release today saying it will pay your tolls for you if you show your receipt. And by that, of course, I mean you will get $1 off.

Howzzat work? The Surf is actually just paying your toll at the Pleasantville exchange of the AC Expressway, which is 50 cents each way. The Surf claim in a release they “have you covered” if you’re “tired of tolls,” but only if the only toll you’re tired of is the 50-cent one at Pleasantville.

“Surf games have always been inexpensive family entertainment, and we don’t want that to change for our fans who come from outlying areas,” Surf VP Ryan Conley said. “Just show us your receipt from your way into the game, and we’ll cover the cost of your tolls – 50 cents each way.”

In other news, the Surf are having will also have William Hung at a game this year. I think the toll promotion has something to do with Gov. Corzine wanting to make tolls $80 per axle by 2010.
