The Inquirer’s Heard in the Hall reports of an angry fax Mayor Street got from Jesus regarding his decision to officiate a gay marriage this Saturday (the people at right are sadly neither the complainers nor the people getting married):
No, Mayor Street, Same-Sex Marriage is Not Legal In Pennsylvania
(Philadelphia) – Outgoing Mayor John Street’s decision to perform a same-sex commitment ceremony on Saturday at City Hall offers a further explanation in the course Philadelphia has taken in the past several years. Today the American Family Association of Pennsylvania (AFA of PA), a statewide group which supports Pennsylvania’s one man, one woman marriage law and the effort to pass a Marriage Protection Amendment to the PA Constitution, faxed the mayor a letter of concern outlining the wrong messages that will be sent by his involvement in Saturday’s activities.
“Mayor Street has drifted off course during his political career. Once a strong advocate for traditional values, he can no longer be trusted to uphold those values that are supposedly part of his belief system,” said Diane Gramley, President of the AFA of PA.

Last week, police picked up a woman for prostitution at Cheyney University. The 36-year-old then told the police she was HIV-positive. Oh, and had sex with 10 students, sometimes unprotected.
So now there’s an HIV scare at Cheyney University, and some people probably don’t want to get tested, and some people have probably had sex with other students after having sex with the hooker, etc., etc. “It was a popular group who she slept with, and the popular group is the same group that the females sleep with. I think if she did have AIDS, it’s going to spread very fast if they don’t get tested,” said a student.
One random voice on this Fox report says the local news media is trying to disgrace black people, even, by reporting about… AIDS… or something. (Cheyney’s an HBC.)
Consider this a public service message, then, from your old pal Daniel McQuade: If you have sex with a partner you aren’t in a monogamous relationship with, use a condom. And, every couple of months, get tested for AIDS and other STDs. It’s free, people.

There might be more hilarious commentary in The Bulletin’s website today than I’ve ever seen anywhere, ever. It is amazing that this is real and not, say, The Onion. Let’s just put it all out there, shall we?
Frank Diamond, “Grossman’s ‘Unprotected’ Thankfully Strays From The Norm“:
Another area where campus counselors fail students is the push for HIV prevention…. That some lifestyle choices greatly increase the risk is deemed too politically incorrect to mention.
Sean Patterson, “Catholic Universities Betray Their Values“:
Moreover, some very un-Catholic events take place on the campuses of Catholic colleges and universities. The calendar of Saint Joseph’s University features an officially-sanctioned week devoted to gay issues, formerly known as “Rainbow Week.” A gay organization called S.T.O.P. (Students for Tolerance, Openness & Pride) is an officially recognized student group at SJU. I suspect that S.T.O.P. does not share the Church’s view of homosexuality.
Shoshana Bryen, “Before We Surge“:
Silvia Spring writes in Newsweek International that since the fall of Saddam:
* Iraqi real-estate prices have gone up several hundred percent,
* Iraqi workers’ salaries have increased more than 100 percent,
* The number of cars in Baghdad has grown by 500 percent,
* The Iraqi construction, retail and wholesale trade sectors are all growing,
* The number of registered businesses increased from 8,000 to 34,000,
* The number of cell phone subscribers increased from 1.4 million to 7.1 million, and
* Stores are stocked with goods and consumers are buying them.
Also, be sure to check out Dom Giordano’s column about how New Jersey is full of people who hate America and why forcing schools to teach kids about Veterans Day and Memorial Day is the best idea ever.
You know, these would be funnier if these weren’t the type of people who run our fucking country. I never knew that AIDS prevention and not hating gay people were such horrible things. Who cares if thousands of people have died in a pointless war: Iraqis now have cell phones! Presumably, all the people who are dead are having a great time texting their dead friends.

It’s no secret that the Bush administration doesn’t always make the right choices when selecting members for positions in the administration. Even the right-wingers came around when he picked Harriet Miers for the Supreme Court, which he appeared to do only because picking Karl Rove would have been one step too far.
Well, what do we have here? None other than Herb Lusk has been selected to the Presidential HIV/AIDS Advisory Council. Yes, the same Herb Lusk who hosted a bunch of anti-gay bigots — Tony Perkins, James Dobson, &c. — at Justice Sunday III back in January.
Now, it’s not as if Lusk isn’t a nice guy — he’s supposed to be a great person — and, as far as I know, he hasn’t done anything fantastically stupid. Basically, he is a supporter of George Bush, is for an amendment to the Constitution banning gay marriage and is buddy-buddy with some other people the president figuratively fellates daily (e.g. Dobson). Of course, not everyone who likes Bush, who’s a conservative Christian or even is opposed to gay marriage hates gays. And maybe he has some good ideas. (He did found a group that helps to fight the tide of AIDS in Africa.)
But isn’t it just like the Bush administration to (1) reward a loyal, vocal, visible supporter with a cushy advisory position that meets only three times a year and (2) pick someone who seemingly stands opposed to gay rights to a council that advises on a disease that affects a disproportionate amount of members of the gay community.
Basically, though, this is just another chance to spread that great chestnut of abstinence-only education as a way to stop AIDS. Remember, he did say this at Justice Sunday III: “My brothers and sisters, I will not go down without a fight! Be careful how you fool with the church! Don’t fool with the church because the church has buried many critics. All the critics we have not buried, we’re making funeral arrangements for!”
Let’s just hope Lusk doesn’t see people with AIDS as critics of the church. Gulp.

Every Thursday is dating day in Metro! And today’s dating page is oh-so-special, because there’s a column about being single by Greg Gilderman.
Being single is something near and dear to my heart since I’ve spent most of my life in this state. But the last paragraph is kind of strange, I must say. You can see an excerpt of the .pdf of the page here, or just read it below:
Some guys drink. Some do drugs. Others try to do the wild thing with as many confused girls from New Jersey as possible. Here’s my point. Even what seems like the apex of the male single life ultimately leads to loneliness and, if you’re not careful, a disease that rhymes with “flaids.”
In his next column, Gilderman is going to write about that horrible event in world history that rhymes with “Dollocaust.”
