‘Northeast Times’ Celebrates Obama Election The Only Way It Knows How

Some news: The Northeast Times‘ website is now part of Philly.com’s MyCommunity section! Obviously! And for some reason all the stories are in Courier New.

That being said, let’s cut to the quick: This week’s editorial, about the inauguration of Barack Obama.

OK, racists of all colors, you can drop the hatred act now. Your gig is up. You can shut your filthy mouths now, for is officially colorblind. Barack Obama, ’s [sic] “first black president,” is now just “President Barack Obama.”

This of course means the time has come to disband groups and causes that are reserved for one race or another. No more “black colleges.” No more “United Negro College Fund.” No more “Black Journalists Association.”

What better way to celebrate the inauguration of the nation’s first black president than by calling for the end of all black colleges! I honestly can’t tell. Is it being tongue-in-cheek? It really doesn’t seem so, but it’s so absolutely insane that I’m wavering. (I’ve heard this argument before, though, too.)

Who knew that the point of the United Negro College Fund was to one day elect a mixed race man as president? The only private organization that should be demolished with the election of Barack Obama is the Group To Elect One — And Only One — Hawaiian President.

The editorial goes on to talk about how Obama’s race is irrelevant, and that he shouldn’t really deal with race at all. That it begins by calling for the end of the Black Journalists Association proves, I think, that Obama will be addressing race issues throughout his presidency.

I actually partially agree with what they’re saying.

We keep saying, as a society, that we want to end racism, eliminate racial barriers… but we still keep them up. Why? Why do we separate people into groups based on skin color? The Negro Leagues are long gone, so are the Jim Crow laws of the idiotic pass. Why not, in this modern age, eliminate groups that includes or only help members of one racial group?

It’s something I’ve been saying for a while. If you want to help poor people, help poor people. If you want to help people who are disadvantaged, please do so. I’d rather see a group dedicated to helping everyone who needs an education get one than one specifically targeting a racial group.

    My 2 cents…

Didn’t you know the NETimes uses Courier New because Helvetica and TNR are fonts used by the liberals?

I agree somewhat with what they are saying also. The whole idea of not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character thing has gone out the window with racists like Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson who would lose their power if they didn’t play the race card every five minutes. They are just as bad, if not worse, than any of these white power nutjobs who name their kids after war criminal mass murderers.

It is time that we get rid of all this institutional racism. Hell, Darwin thought everyone came from the same starting point and the variety of humans was created by sexual selection. Race is an artificial construct and those who keep making an issue of it are in fact racist.

I didn’t vote for Obama because he was black, mixed-race, or because of his name. I voted for him because I don’t vote for corrupt Chicago politicians, which would be voting on conent of character. Not that the Washington insider who lost his mind in Hanoi was a much better option.

It’s a whole different argument, I think: We should eliminate such groups because we’ve gotten far enough as a society versus we should eliminate them because Obama is president. The idea I was making fun of was that Obama as president means there is no more racism (or whatever).

But I would probably disagree anyway, though I understand your point. Mainly I just don’t really care that people, with their own private money, set up an organization designed to help black people go to college. But what’s wrong with, say, the Black Journalists Association (or, rather, the National Association of Black Journalists), which I can only assume helps black journalists on issues specifically affecting them. Would you have to go through these types of organizations on a case-by-case basis?

I think it’s just kind of something I can’t even care about (how typical). But just as you are free to not give them your money, I am free to not give them my money and not mention them on this blog until 3+ years in.

I’ll say it since it often get’s brought up from some: What if someone created a fund just for whites? Yeah, yeah, uproar, racism, etc…

I think that now that Obama’s president, and with his talk of “change”, people actually want to see it. They want to start to tear down racial barriers like that. No one is saying racism is dead (save the naive), and dmac, I see what you mean about private groups doing it.

Are there, possibly, problems affecting only black journalists? Maybe, I wouldn’t know. Are there problems affecting Hispanic journalists, Asian, and maybe Little People Journalists? Maybe. Why not just have a group that handles it all and, if needed, sub-divisions in said group for more specific things?

Eh… it’s a really complicated concept and I doubt anyone will have an answer for 5 years.

there should be one race - the human race. We should be busy keeping barries to entry high for grizzly bears, tigers and sharks, people! And hurry, those sharks are getting smarter!

I am proud to announce the founding of the National Association for the Advancement of Sharks.

Is it true the Coors Brewing Company donates to the United Shark College Fund?
