Shh! The Train Is Moving!

011209cashonlysepta.jpg You may have heard about SEPTA’s decision to create a “quiet car” test run on the R5; passengers will be prohibited from using cell phones in one car of the train on rush hour trains. They’ll also be asked not to talk ridiculously loudly to each other.

Anyway, today is the program’s launch! Woohoo! (I mean that in a completely theoretical sense. Not only do I not ride the R5, I would definitely not sit in the quiet car and miss out on hilarious overheard conversations. Plus, as Matthew Mitchell of something called the “Delaware Valley Association of Rail Passengers” says in that Inquirer article, “it’s not like the average peak-hour train is all that raucous.”)

If the program is successful, it’ll be expanded in March. The idea is that it will be largely self-policing program, as who the hell is going to intentionally sit in the one quiet car and then make a phone call, the main thing you’re not allowed to do in it. Hmm, I think I’d rather not make bets on that.

Amtrak has quiet cars, but they really don’t work when the conductor is yakking away on their cell phone or talking loudly to one of their buddies.

how about making tokens accessible at every station for Market-Frankford Line/ Broad Street Line/ trolleys? or kiosks where you can use credit cards/debit cards to purchase rides? instead of being told at 5th street station that you can’t ride unless you have exact change? Accessibility is key in my mind, and SEPTA sucks in this regard.

In the year I spent riding the train to/from Manayunk I don’t think I was ever in a car that was loud. As a matter of fact most everyone was miserable and quiet.

Quiet cars might NOT work. Plus they said people on “business” can use their phone, as long as they are not loud. I was actually happy when AT&T gave service on the EL. However, I think it’s awkward when you’re the only one on the phone haha.

the only line that needs this service is the R2 from Wilmington (or Newark or Marcus Hook) to Center City— loudest most annoying train ride any day at any time of the day.
