Press release received earlier today:
This holiday season Starbucks and Zipcar are teaming up to reward good Samaritans in Philadelphia. Zipcar will be driving around the City with life size magnetic versions of Starbucks signature red holiday cups attached to their roofs. When individuals stop to warn the drives about their coffee cup, drivers will then reward that person with a free Starbucks gift card.
If you have any further questions, please let me know.
Um, yes, I have a question: What the hell??
Here is a suggestion: Anyone who sees these should simply grab the coffee cup off the roof and run away. (If it’s possible.)

uhhhhhhhhhh?
jesus
A Starbucks gift card is a reward?
I had trouble getting rid of one I got last year since I don’t patronize the second most evil company from the state of Washington.
I’ll take it, not for the coffee but the cheesecake they do at Barnes&Noble is both delicious and overpriced.
That is clever. I saw one yesterday and thought, geez those people with the zip car don’t get out much, they left their coffee on the roof of the car. Everyone on Chestnut Street was staring and pointing, trying to figure out when it was going to drop off.
Dan, it’s my understanding that the cafes at B&N can’t take Starbucks gift cards. They serve the product, but they’re not actually Starbucks themselves. (I have this on good authority from my brother, who’s worked at a B&N cafe in the burbs for a few years.)
Do you think they’ll still give me a gift card if I try knocking it off the roof of the car at a red light or if I yell “you forgot your coffee on the top of the car (insert random profanity here)”? I’m technically still calling their attention to the coffee being there…
Has society really reached the point where pointing out a coffee cup on a car is “good samartin” like
[...] If anyone see’s a Zipcar with a Starbucks coffee sitting on the roof of the car, don’t take it! Starbucks is teaming up with Zipcar for a “Good Samaritan” promotion in Philadelphia. Using fake magnetic coffee cups, they will strategically place it on the roof of the car & drive around the city. Anyone who warns the driver that they’ll left their coffee on the roof, will be rewarded with a free Starbucks gift card. Don’t say you weren’t warned, be a good person!! [WillDo] [...]
Will Starbucks pay the medical bills when some idiot is hit by a SEPTA bus because he ran out into Broad Street to get a $5 gift card?
Let’s be the first to name the “counter” craze whereby people will leave any old beverage on top of car rooftops. Someone mentioned a lawsuit in a previous post, perhaps, but it may be for concealed weapons violations and manslaughter instead of hit and run while reaching for gift card.
geeze everyone is so negative. lighten up. I think its a cute idea.
I agree with Julia–in terms of marketing strategies it’s a cute idea. Plus, during this time of high holidy stress (Thank you recession!), people need a reason to smile. Since when has my Philly become so cynical and whiny?
This just happened to me, I was on South St. and some guy was a red light with the cup on top…So I told him and he jumped out and gave me the card.
I agree with Heather & Julia - Everyone needs to chill out, it’s just a fun idea and hey it made me feel pretty happy - warm coffee on a cold day!
Fourteen posts on a non-Alycia Lane/Larry Mendte thread tells me its main goal of getting people to talk about it is working.

Did I mention that Alycia and Booker were making out at G Lounge last week like they were a couple of high school kids on a first date?
Haha, is this some sort of twisted way of teaching us all to play nice nice with one another? Lets reject it and see what else we can get.
Hey guys,
I’m with Zipcar and today is our last day out with these cards, so look for us! We’ll probably be all over the place…Center City, South Philly, Your Mom’s house, etc. See you on the streets!
I’m sure it was a real hit with Philadelphians.
