Philadelphia Will Do

Finally, A Holiday We Can Really Celebrate

The 4th of July? Eh. Today we get a holiday we can really be proud of, thanks to Mayor Nutter.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter will issue a “BINdependence Day” Proclamation to approximately 200 city youth, junior block captains, community members and dignitaries. The City of Philadelphia has declared July 7, 2008 “BINdependence Day” to mark the completion of the expansion of single stream recycling for the City of Philadelphia. Residents all across the city will now be able to put all recyclables into one bin - any bin.

Yes, happy BINdependence Day, Philadelphians! Nutter’s release says he’ll be at Dilworth Plaza at 2 p.m. Truly this is a holiday where we should be shooting off fireworks like the world has never seen. I wonder if BINdependence Day is always going to be July 7 or if it’s always the Monday after the 4th. More importantly, I wonder if we’ll get off for it next year.

The Streets Department has a nice list of inconvenient locations where one can get blue bins.

Or maybe you could get one at today’s press conference? Play hooky and bug the mayor ’til he gives you one!

no centers near center city seems a mistake.
There’s no white people at 63rd and Passyunk!
