City To Fool Motorists Into Hitting Brakes Um, so here’s a good idea: Let’s put plastic on the ground that makes it look like there’s something in the street. That way, drivers will That’s the plan of a new program called DriveCare Philly, which attempts to make people slow down with the use of these “high-tech” devices. Take, for instance, Bluegrass Road in the Great Northeast (if you must know, it’s near my parents’ house). The speed limit is 25, and yet people — get this! — drive much faster than 25 down that road. And these fake 3D bumps and a few other things are going to solve that problem, hallelujah. Then we can move on to the inevitable rear-end crashes these plastic things cause, knowing Philadelphians. 3D Images Part of City’s Effort to Slow Down Drivers [KYW 1060] |

I’m not sure optical illusions are necessarily the way to go but SOMETHING needs to be done about the way people drive on residential streets up here.
The corner I live on only has a two way stop and on the cross street, before they put a stop sign in a block up, people used to blow through that intersection at 45-50mph. This is a little one-way street with about 6.02×10^23 kids living within a block of that corner.
Tricking people probably isn’t the way to do it - there is definite possibility of hilarious with this plan - but without a doubt something must be done. Bluegrass Road specifically is frightening; it’s like a goddamned F1 track.
That should be, er, a one-way stop. Sorry. I was distracted by Buffon’s penalty save…
Verree Road is 25 mph, too. What a bunch of bullshit. The problem is not that people drive too quickly, it’s that the speed limits are too low.
actually, Blue Grass Road now has real airport style speed humps on. There are three of them right before you get to welsh road. Those bastards, now it takes me an extra 30 seconds to avoid the red light camera trap at grant and the blvd…
