Cleanup A Success No Thanks To Me

Michael Nutter was scheduled to announce this morning the citywide cleanup Saturday was a success; if cleanliness is next to godliness, then Philadelphia has escaped hell for purgatory.

On a report on Fox Saturday night, the mayor said that a clean city is a safe city. And then he added: “23,000 public employees, a million and a half citizens, we can’t do it all by ourselves. Your work, Kerri-Lee, and the many others who have gotten involved in this, it really makes a difference.”

Woo-hoo! Anybody tells you Philadelphia Will Do makes a difference, you can tell them I didn’t post about the citywide cleanup1 and that I strive every day to not make a difference. I do enjoy Nutter’s shirt from benevolent corporate sponsor Verizon. There is no doubt Nutter is simply trying to emulate Bernard Hopkins and his GoldenPalace.com temporary tattoo.

Report from Fox 29’s Kerri-Lee Halkett after the jump. (Standard Redlasso it-could-kill-your-computer warning.)

Halkett apparently filed this report from the end of a long, narrow hallway.

Update: Ooh, Nutter’s camp sent out a press release as well.

KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL SAYS PHILLY SPRING CLEANUP “LARGEST SINGLE-DAY CITYWIDE CLEANUP EVENT”

Philadelphia, April 08 – Mayor Michael A. Nutter reported the results of the April 5th Philly Spring Cleanup at a press conference at City Hall today. Goals that were set prior to the Cleanup were met and exceeded, and Keep America Beautiful - the organization responsible for clean-ups across the country – has confirmed that the Philly Spring Cleanup was the largest single day, citywide clean-up on record in the United States.

“Even I was taken aback by the scale of what was achieved on Saturday,” said Mayor Nutter. “I am so proud of the thousands of volunteers, the dedicated public servants, the community organizations and corporate sponsors who all worked so hard to make this event such a huge success.”

“With over 17,000 events taking place each spring, Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup is the nation’s largest community improvement program,” said Matthew McKenna, president and CEO of Keep America Beautiful. “Across all categories, the Philly Spring Cleanup was the largest single-day citywide cleanup event to happen in event’s 24-year history. We’re proud that our local affiliate, Keep Philadelphia Beautiful, was able to help Mayor Nutter in this incredible effort.”

1 I know, I know, I forgot to post that unintentionally funny commercial with Michael Nutter and Jimmy Rollins. I dropped the ball on that one — but at least I dropped it into a trash can!
