Strawberry Mansion Stable Shuttered

Here is one of your few chances to see horses in the middle of a city street, at least besides ones pulling tourists being told Ben Franklin sired 80 illegitimate Swedish children. The city today busted up an illegal horse stable in Strawberry Mansion.

Apparently the stables were unsanitary and hazardous, and so 46 horses were removed. The city will actually raze the stables on Friday. Philly SPCA head Lisa Rodgers told clued us in on why there were actually horses in Strawberry Mansion.

(Kuznits:) “What are people doing with the horses in the city?”

(Rodgers:) “Well, they’ve got this urban cowboy type situation. They’re in such close proximity to the park that they take the horses out and they ride through the park. They claim that the children in the neighborhood take care of the horses and it’s a way to keep them out of trouble. And some of that may well be true, but unfortunately, our concern is that the horses are in unsanitary conditions.”

Perhaps the urban cowboys can rustle up a posse and take down the varmints in this city.

Someone needs to tell the SPCA person to check out the stable on MLK Blvd (west river drive). Those horses are barely feed or given water let alone in clean conditions. No vet care whatsoever. Also the folks there use it as a non-profit front when they really are running an illegal horse racing/gambling ring. This would be an awesome racket to bust. They race up in Fairmont Park. The only horses in that stable that are cared for are the ones that race. They proport that kids stay out of trouble because they are caring for the horses and the stable–not so! Doesn’t even happen. It’s just a gross abuse of a system that is supposed to help. Someone needs to go get ‘em! Is there a new sheriff in town that can take these crooks on? Also, isn’t it illegal to have a horse if you have less than an acre of land? I alsways thought you had to have one acre per horse.

This is absolutely absurd that people are abusing such beautiful and gentle creatures. I’m very happy to see that the “stable” was shut down. I feel for the children in the area that really got some much needed unconditional love that horses are capable of, but the horses are dependent on humans to take care of them… and if someone isn’t doing a good job then they don’t deserve to be around them.

I also know of the stable on the West River Drive mentioned above by the poster Nadine. I’ve seen many, many beautiful days go by with all of the horses kept inside w/o fresh air, clean stalls and room to stretch their long legs. I don’t hesitate to write that these horses have been very poorly taken care of and neglected. I really hope the SPCA or some agency goes in and rescues those horses.

I live in an urban area and I see horses all the time:Center City, Valley Green etc. I’m tired of people using living in a urban area as a preventive from allowing them to see the world. The parents of these children can take a train ride, go to the zoo etc. There’s no excuse for living in an urban area and living as if you can’t take a bus or train. If theye can go to the Gallery they can travel anywhere.
