Leftovers: Anonymous $5 Million Checks

• Vince Fumo is all about taking on Johnny Doc for State Senate, he says. “Johnny Doc has no base!” he comments. “Now help me shave these alpacas!” he continues. Do you shave alpacas? Or are they bred for meat or something? Come to think of it, what the hell is an alpaca? [KYW 1060]

• Some dude sent $5 million in anonymous donations to Temple. How does one make an anonymous donation by personal check? It’s not like you can get a money order for $5 mil. Though if you have enough money I guess you can find a way. [AP/6 ABC]

Gullit and Babayaro Join Beckham in LA. Yeah, you can guess how I read that headline. Thanks, Chrissy. [Square Football]

• If anyone ever asks you to explain The Bulletin to you, just show them this column. It sums it up pretty well. [The Bulletin]

• SEPTA opened a new ticket office at Temple. Requisite comment from student: “I was on campus one weekday afternoon over break, and no one was there.” [SEPTA Watch]

• Will the 76ers ever start a frontcourt of Sammy D, Thaddeus and J-Smith? No, probably not, because that makes too much sense. They’re getting more fun to watch, though. [Sixers Shots]

• Oh! And RPS, most likely with your editor present, at The Dive tomorrow night. [RPS City League]

Did you see Herb Denenberg’s tagline at the end of his column?:

“Herb Denenberg, a former Pennsylvania insurance commissioner and professor at the Wharton School, is a longtime Philadelphia journalist and consumer advocate. He is also a member of the National?Academy of Arts and Sciences.”

Is he also a member of the Franklin Institute? Why doesn’t it mention his library card status?

What I cannot understand is where the money for the Bulletin is coming from; at least they’ve stopped throwing free copies into my yard. Saves me a trip to the recycle bin.

When I read at an event last year, I made sure to note I was a member of the Society for American Baseball Research. Of course, I was just screwing around, and Denenberg is… ohhhh, that explains it.

  5. Johnny Goodtimes Says: Feb 7 12:25 PM

“the media downplays the threat of terrorism and of nuclear-armed rogue states. It gives little play to those sounding the alarm…”

I love that this was published on February 6th, the same day the new York Times had a front page article titled, “Intelligence Chief Says Al Quaeda Improves Ability to Strike in U.S.”
