Goodbye To The Spectrum?Above, a possible rendering for the new Philly Live! complex that could replace the Spectrum. This rendering has the place knocked down; the Wachovia Center is at right.
Cornish also said I-95’s Broad Street interchange is the busiest in the world. He also says Ed & him are debating whether to connect the Spectrum to the Wachovia Center or possibly knock down the Spectrum and build a hotel. Snider said it’s about 50/50 whether the Spectrum will stay or go. As reported, the complex could have shops, retail, a hotel, condos, free live music and possibly free pony rides. |

wow. and this is the perfect time to build a retail complex in the middle of nowhere in south philadelphia. especially with the recession scare.
Actually, it is the perfect time. Cost to build will be lower than it would be during another part of the business cycle. And by the time it’s complete, the cycle will be on the upswing.
They have PatriotPlace envy (www.patriot-place.com).
Save the SPECTRUM!!!
“and this is the perfect time to build a retail complex in the middle of nowhere in south philadelphia”
haha so true
You NIMBYs make me sick, always trying to kill the best projects that will revive the city. You should be ashamed of yourselves.
Isn’t a recession a good time for a big public project that will put people to work? Isn’t a giant empty spot a good place to put something/anything? Or will the sports arena become too much like a place people will want to be before or after their game is over?
I hate you people who support developers no matter what they want to do. They could be building a giant penis on that lot and you guys would go nuts and worship it. You need to start expecting more from developers.
Right on Nina Rivera!! Who needs more shopping? I need a titty bar right between the spectrum and the center. Now that would be an entertainment supercenter. C’mon developers, the future isn’t condo’s and boutiques! its sex robots! U-S-A! U-S-A!
You need the Spectrum for all the bullshit like rodeos, monster trucks, the Phantoms, etc.
it isnt going anywhere.
They should consider building a giant morgue with glass walls so you could bring all the bodies down from North Philly for mass viewings. Entertainmant at its best!

Ed Snider doesn’t want to tear down the Spectrum, and he doesn’t have to. Incorporate the Spectrum into the hotel construction. Build the hotel on top!
The Spectrum is a dinosaur. Why leave it there for eternity? So you can drive past and think about all the great things you’ve seen in there as it sits wasted, empty, and dilapidated? It has no useful purpose anymore, besides monster-truck rallies and Kixx games. We have the opportunity to make our stadium area a focal point of the city, where people can watch a game, then actually walk across the street and have dinner, get a cup of coffee, go to a bar, shop, and not have to rush home. And you want to stop that, so that you can still have your ability to drive past it and hold onto memories?
I got nuts over giant penises. I absolutely worship them.
The Spectrum is an historic landmark in the city of Philadelphia and should be preserved at all costs. I can’t believe the way every so flippantly calls for its demolition.
People said the same thing about Connie Mack & the Vet; are they any less of a historical landmark than the Spectrum? It’d be hard to argue that their demolition wasn’t an important step forward for the city to improve itself.
There is a big difference between legitimate historical preservation and people keeping buildings to sit-around like tombs because they can’t let go.
Are you reading what you type? You sound like a dumbass when you suggest that the most historic city in the country should destroy its own history and heritage. You need to brush up on your history. Look what happened to Athens when the Coliseum collapsed.
It’s not like we’re talking about destroying Independence Hall or the Liberty Bell moron. It’s a sports arena… which no longer has any use to the sports teams for which it was originally built. So we should just let it sit there forever because it’s historic, despite no one wanting to use it except for dirt bike shows? You think the Spectrum is going to become a historic tourist attraction for which people will want to tour and visit? Please, it’s a fucking building. And old, outdated building that’s a part of our past. Let go Grandma.
Wait wait, you are comparing ancient Athens to 1950’s Philadelphia?!?! And you want to call me a dumbass? What are you, 85 years old?
Just a correction: I am suggesting we destroy Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell and replace them with a dollar store.
Anonymous, you are a dumbass because you don’t seem to realize that today’s boring, useless building becomes tomorrow’s architectural masterpiece that people pay money to look at in wonderment of what their ancestors were able to achieve. Also, didn’t your mother teach you not to ask a woman’s age? That’s really none of your business. Finally, ancient Athens and 1950s Philadelphia have a lot in common because at those respective times, they were both the center of culture and finance in their country. Oh yes, and where do you get off discriminating against dirt bikers? They have a right to practice their sport in the city, just like the hockey players and basketball players.
dmac, I think your suggestion is awful. If we should fight to preserve the Spectrum, then we should die for the sake of keeping Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell intact. You people are worse than I thought. You’re monsters!
Nina, regardless of how old you are, you ought to go back and finish 6th grade if you honestly think Philadelphia was the center of finance and culture in America in the 1950’s. And if you really think that the Spectrum is an architecutral masterpiece, then you really ought to get out more.
The Spectrum was built in the late 60’s, a time when the City was losing industry and money was scarce. It was built to be modest and unimpressive, b/c the City and Pennsylvania couldn’t afford to make it anything else. It is not an architectural masterpiece and it was never designed to be. It was designed just to be a plain old building that people could go to and see the Sixers and Flyers.
And if you honestly thought DMAC was serious… then you must be 85 years old.
Anonymous, I’m tired of arguing with you. It will all come down to who knows the right people. I can guarantee you that, if I have my way, the Spectrum won’t be demolished.
P.S. The Coliseum is in Rome, not Athens.
Nina, if you really had the ability to do anything about this, you wouldn’t be spending your time arguing with a stranger over a blog.
There was a coliseum in Rome and in Athens. You referenced the one in Athens, but then questioned my knowledge of history? Are you bi-polar?
Anonymous, you just showed your ignorance by saying that the coliseum was moved from Rome to Athens. That would be about as amazing as the construction of the pyramids.
I said I was through arguing with you, though, so I won’t dignify you with a response.
Nina, honestly, you may be one of the dumbest human beings ever. I said there were TWO COLOSSEUMS, ONE in Athens and ONE in Rome. One plus One equals Two. How you arrived at “they moved the Colosseum from Athens to Rome”, I have no idea.
Athens Colosseum: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panathinaiko_Stadium
Roman Colosseum:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colosseum
You referenced the one in Athens, which is why I did. Your exact words were: “Look what happened to Athens when the Coliseum collapsed. So please, for your own dignity, just stop talking.
Anonymous, your foolishness shows why you don’t have the guts to post under your own name. That structure in Athens you linked to is a “stadium” and not a “coliseum.” And stop denying that you said things that are documented in writing.
As I said before, I’m tired of arguing with you and won’t dignify you with a response, but you keep replying to me and insulting me, so I’m forced to defend myself. Your lack of intelligence and manners are appalling.
Nina, scroll up and read your own posts again jackass. The only reason we are even discussing Rome Vs. Athens Vs. Philly is because you made that assinine comparison which was unfounded, historically incorrect, and just plain dumb. YOU MADE THE COMPARISON. YOU. Read your own words again.
It scares me to death that people like you are allowed to drive cars and vote. Go enjoy the architectural wonderment of the Spectrum now before it gets torn down and have yourself a great day.
You said Athens had a coliseum when it really has a stadium. You’re the one who shouldn’t be driving a car. The fact that you’re resorting to personal attacks and name-calling also proves that I’m winning the argument and you’re getting desperate.
Nina… THIS WAS YOUR EXACT QUOTE:
Look what happened to Athens when the Coliseum collapsed.

Now please, for everyone’s sake, stop talking
You keep insisting that there’s a coliseum in Athens when there’s really a stadium or something. I really don’t understand you.
Besides, who cares about some coliseum. We’re talking about the Spectrum here. The Spectrum is a part of our city’s history and whatever coliseum, whether in Rome or Athens, is just an old building in a far away place. If we demolish the Spectrum, I guarantee that the city will experience faster decline than it has been.
Wow Nina… I honestly can’t believe you are this unbelievably dense. Take care. Stay off the roads please.
You are the dense one, anonymous. At least I’m attractive and can get a date. You’re probably some pathetic geek whom people of the opposite sex run away from.
Anyway, I feel sorry for you since you can’t seem to grasp that the Spectrum may be old, but it’s definitely expendable for the sake of progress and economic development. I say knock it down if it will bring revenue to the city.
It doesn’t seem like this post is getting many comments anymore but I had to say something…Nina is an idiot! She either couldn’t grasp what Anonymous was getting at or she choice to ignore it.
She starts the whole argument with, “The Spectrum is an historic landmark in the city of Philadelphia and should be preserved at all costs. I can’t believe the way every so flippantly calls for its demolition.” But then later completely flip flops, “…it’s definitely expendable for the sake of progress and economic development. I say knock it down if it will bring revenue to the city.” WTF? She was arguing that it’s a historic landmark and then she does a 180° turn — idiot!
Nina also argues about a coliseum in Athens but can’t remember that she started it — idiot!
Nina calls Anonymous out for name calling and then turns around and calls him/her, “some pathetic geek whom people of the opposite sex run away from.” — idiot!
Reading these comments was both very sad and very hilarious. I hope I don’t see her on the roads lol.
