Phillies Hire Harry Kalas’ Successor

Yesterday, the Phillies re-hired Tom McCarthy, who worked the Phillies’ radio broadcast from 2001 to 2005 before leaving for the Mets radio job.

McCarthy is a good PBP guy, and he’ll now work three innings of television when Harry is on break. (This means no more Chris Wheeler play-by-play, which is what he’s better at.) McCarthy signed an unprecedented five-year deal with the Phillies, which is two years longer than any deal Harry Kalas has ever signed.

“I always enjoyed working with T-Mac,” Kalas said. “I’m glad he’s back in Philadelphia.”

Kalas is 71, but he’s not heading out the door anytime soon, huzzah, huzzah. I’m still up for just hiring a Harry Kalas impersonator (Joe Conklin?) to do PBP when he retires, but McCarthy is pretty good. I still kinda miss Scott Graham, though, but my guess is he’s not enough of a yes-man to work for the Phillies.

Yea, what was the reason behind letting Scott Graham go?

That’s a beautiful rug on Chris Wheeler. When he retires, will the Phils replace him with another guy to hate?

did anyone ever come up with a reason why they booted graham? i heard him hosting on 950 one day and some guy was ranting and raving about how it figured graham would say this and that nice thing about the team because he worked for them, and finally graham was like, um, why would i be nice, THEY FIRED ME!

    anyway, yeah.

Short answer: Scott Graham is, at best, an ass wipe. At worst, he is a social retard.

  5. jas. Says: Nov 28 3:45 PM

that may be true, but he was a pretty ok play by play announcer.

He also has to represent the organization and spend just about every day with the other people in the booth. Besides, Franzke is just as good and Tom McCarthy has become a terrific PBP guy in New York - without the creepiness.

yeah i’m all about the mccarthy hire. i just didn’t understand the graham firing. guess if he’s a creep, that would explain it…

I don’t know Scott Graham as a person, but as a baseball broadcaster he was awful. He often didn’t know what he was talking about. When he was paired with Chris Wheeler, the broadcasts were unbearable. Those two jabbered like idiots, and told the most retarded stories that had nothing to do with the game that was going on.

I thought Tom McCarthy was OK when he was here before. What I want to know is, why is Larry Anderson getting pushed aside? He’s the best of the bunch (after Harry K).

Wheels has his say on the addition of Tom McCarthy!!!

Uh, I don’t think Wheels actually wrote that “e-mail.”

The guy making all the calls is the former radio engineer with the phils. Rob Brooks, he was a sideline guy on CN8 where grahm, mcCarty both had their own little gig this is where the whole connection is made. I think it’s great that wheeler will be gone from the pbp. Not sure if Tmac can fill the shoes of Harry! he’s a utility guy making a starters salary. Tell me why don’t the phils follow that logic with signing top talent on the field not in the booth?
