Philadelphia Will Do

A Republican To Be Phila. Mayor Any Day Now

Taubenberger

Just one day after candidate Al Taubenberger got a smidge over 17 percent of the vote against Democratic candidate Michael Nutter, the Philadelphia Grand Old Party appears ready to take back Room 215 in City Hall.

Oh? Just look at this KYW 1060 headline, “GOP Philadelphias Vow to Regain Control of City Hall.” In the report, noted GOP Philadelphia Mike Meehan (chief counsel to the Republican City Committee) issues a bold prediction: “There’s going to come a time that a Republican’s gonna be mayor.”

Apparently, other cities voted for Republican mayors, and so Philadelphia could have a Republican mayor just like New York. (New York’s Republican mayor is, though, a pot-smoking one. On if he smoked weed, he said: “You bet I did. And I enjoyed it.” Rare honesty from a politician.)

So will Philadelphia copy off New York and elect a Republican? Uhh, no, not anytime soon, unless there’s a rich person who would like to run. (Meehan also said the candidate would have to start raising money now due to the city’s fund-raising laws. So… cheating?) Maybe Brian Tierney can run as the Charles Foster Kane of this city?

It’s not enough to have a rich guy run. We had one run this year, but he was a doofus and lost.

God, you know nothing of New York politics.
When Giuliani was elected in 1993 he ran as a Republican and as a Liberal. The previous mayor who was a Republican, John Lindsay, ran as a Republican and as a Liberal in 1965 then on the Liberal ticket in 1969.

In 2001, Bloomberg ran as a candidate on the Republican and the Independence party lines, and was previously a Democrat. He recently announced that he was an independent.

There is more political plurality in New York and less corruption. Philadelphia rivals New Jersey with its corruption, although the graft and corruption seems to be confined to the Democrat party. We also wouldn’t be shocked to hear of rigged voting machines.

yeah GOD DAN YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT NEW YORK POLITICS WHAT KIND OF 6TH BOROUGH CITIZEN ARE YOU!?!??!?!?

There’s plenty of corruption in the Philly Republican party, too, generally among those who’ve managed to get their fingers in the Democrats’ pie.

oh man why is anyone fingering democrats’ pies?

The only way this city elects a Republican as mayor is if:
    a) We get a Katrina that wipes out the poor and lower class citizens, leaving only the upper middle class and rich yuppies of CC [see Louisiana electing Bobby Jindal, only their fourth Republican governor since 1877 - it's amazing what a little magic and mass displacement of predominently automatic Democratic voters can do!]

Or the more likely option, as other cities have done…

    b) Get another Democrat who is kind of, somewhat moderate, lose their party’s primary yet is still popular with the masses [easy to do since the Democratic party in this city is completely out of touch with, well, reality]. Then the pitch & switch over the Republican party to join the list of RINOs [Republican in name only] to control the city politics.

But a real Republican? Nope, it’s been 55 years since and it’s not going to happen in the future - when a city would rather have a lying, tax evading, FBI-investigated scumbag like John Street over Sam Katz because of party affiliation? Yeah, don’t hold your breath, Republicans. Enjoy Nutter cause he’s the closest you’re going to get.

Us pie fingerers don’t discriminate based on party affiliation.
