And Now A Full Post On The Byko Column

Stu Bykofsky went to that 10,000 men rally yesterday at the Liacouras Center, and the resulting column was pretty much what you’d expect from an old white man attending a rally of 10,000 black people: Complete and total awesomeness.

He first notes the rally lost about a third of the crowd around the time the Eagles game started. (It went from 2:40 to 5.) But the opening graf is pretty awesome, too:

THE USE of the Liacouras Center at Temple University, a seat of learning, was unintended symbolism for yesterday’s “10,000 Men: A Call to Action,” the black mobilization to take back the city’s toughest neighborhoods from killers, drug dealers, hustlers and pimps.

Pimps! Now there’s a job you don’t really see reported on in the news much. “Pimp kills 2,” perhaps the headlines would read. Hustlers, too; I kind of thought hustlers would encompass drug dealers and pimps, but maybe not. Maybe Byko lost a lot of money to a pool hustler and doesn’t want that to happen to somebody else.

Many wore suits and almost all were in black, the color du jour. You didn’t see any pants hanging off butts, no oversize white Ts. These were men you felt safe around.

Paragraph of the article. You know, it is possible — and I think this might be shocking to some — to wear your pants low, wear a stupid oversized white t-shirt and not kill anybody. Prediction: “These were men you felt safe around” will be the best sentence in any newspaper this week.

“I’ve been on both sides of crime and violence,” 38-year-old Troy Slight told me. “I did time in Graterford for homicide.” He saw the error of his ways and wants to keep kids in his South Philadelphia neighborhood from repeating his mistakes.

Ahh, yes, he has been on both sides of crime and violence, but he hasn’t been murdered, so really he’s making out on this deal, I think.

Two enemies of the black community were named by several speakers.

One was the media, which several speakers denounced, but none as directly as U.S. Rep. Bob Brady, who roared, “They are against you.” Identifying a common enemy is a technique speakers use to create a sense of unity and mission in the audience. In this case, it’s crap.

I didn’t get a chance to collar Brady to ask him to name the media outlet he had in mind. Maybe he knew that on Thursday about a dozen leaders of “10,000 Men” came to the Daily News to vent against an earlier editorial that questioned the efficacy of the men-to-the-streets idea. Some of them went so far as to brand the Daily News an enemy of the African-American community.

Ha ha, that Daily News, always questioning things and expressing their views. How dare they!
