Philadelphia Will Do

New A.C. Mayor Won’t Let Old Staffers Pass Go

I know what you’re thinking. “How, exactly,” you say, “can this Atlantic City mayoral scandal get any better? The missing fake Green Beret mayor resigned already. There’s nothing else that’s gonna happen in this story.” (Incidentally, I know what you’re thinking because you’re saying it out loud. Try to be a little quieter.)

Let me assuage your fears: This story is far from over. Atlantic City politics are kind of like Philadelphia politics, except everyone is about 100 times stupider. (So maybe it’s like 1980s Philly politics?) This means there’s still plenty of laughs to go around. For example: William “Speedy” Marsh, after being sworn in last week, decided to do this:

He fired city Human Resources Director Gwendolyn O. Lewis on Friday afternoon and said he plans to fire other top officials early next week. [...] City Solicitor Kimberly A. Baldwin, Neighborhood Services Director Timothy J. Mooney and Levy’s spokesman, Nicholas J. Morici, will be given termination letters the next time they arrive for work, said two individuals with knowledge of the arrangement who spoke on condition of anonymity.

But, wait, there’s more! Turns out Marsh owes Atlantic City $363,000, money he got in a settlement that was later overturned. Marsh and Lorenzo Langford sued the city for wrongful termination, claiming they were fired as political revenge. Langford then became mayor, and — whoops! — City Council then agreed to a settlement with the two men. The court decided this was a bit of a conflict of interest and ordered Marsh to pay the money back; his lawyer is figuring out how he’s going to do that soon. (Tip to Marsh: Giant oversized novelty check.)

The new mayor will be chosen by the Democratic City Committee; Marsh says that he doesn’t have any friends there so he’s content being mayor for just a few weeks. The citizens of A.C., however, kind of like Marsh because he always opposed the former City Council president, Craig Callaway, now in jail for corruption.

You Are Correct. Atlantic City has a “sitcom” government or to show my age The Ted Mack Amateur Government Hour” with guest host interim Mayor Speedy. But don’t worry everything will be alright. MGM, Pinnacle, Revel and Borgata really don’t seem to care. By the way the walk part four is in planning and three new towers are almost complete. It’s been reported that Tavern On The Green will be the restaurant at the top of Harrah’s new tower. So listen when you come to town don’t disturb city council fighting among themselves and eventually they’ll just go away.

When you visit Atlantic City and you’re enjoying our great accommodations, flip on channel 2 and watch the local city council meetings, now that’s reality entertainment!
