Practicing Direct Democracy In Atlantic City

Like a dictator in exile, fake Green Beret and Atlantic City mayor Bob Levy went into hiding — or, rather, “sick leave” — on Sept. 28. Since then, City Administrator Domenic Cappella has been acting as acting mayor, but nobody’s really sure if he should actually be allowed to have that power.

And, so, on cue, a mob of angry citizens stormed City Hall. “City resident” Steve Young led a protest into City Hall, declaring, “Every week you hear of some official going to jail because of being corrupt or some other unlawful issue.” Oh, and he complained about police brutality, too.


“About 15 resort residents” who want to recall the missing mayor joined Young in the pulling up the portcullis and getting the gate key by using Andre the Giant pretending to the the Dread Pirate Roberts. Oh, and you better believe there were snipers, too, but the protesters had to go through metal detectors anyway.

And, then, this exercise in democracy!

He led the group through the City Hall metal detectors, telling officers who buttonholed him that he was in the building to petition his government. Riding to the seventh floor in several packed elevators, their group found the glass doors to the mayor’s office locked.

“The mayors office is closed,” Young said to the crowd. “The city is now shut down. This is a disgrace.”

As they complained about Cappella, Cappella arrived. “Right here!” he said.

When Young asked for the mayor, Cappella said, “I am the mayor.”

“Then you should act like a mayor,” city resident Willie Norwood said.

“You should act like a man,” Cappella shot back.

Cappella defended his integrity and said there have been people who were way more corrupt in the past. Then he got into an argument with Big Mike.

“I’m not corrupt,” Cappella said. “You don’t see my name in the papers. My reputation is clean.”

“That’s just because you haven’t been caught yet,” shot back protester Michael Johnson, known as Big Mike.

Anyway there’s still no mayor in Atlantic City. The state is worried the casinos are going to get worried, so now they’re just going to bomb it clear and then re-open the bidding processes for new casinos.
