SugarHouse Casino: Accept Us Or Die
SugarHouse Casino, the winner for the slots parlor license in Fishtown, recently sent out a mailer to “thousands” of Philadelphia residents with the title “More cops on the street? We’re putting our money on it.” Get it? Because SugarHouse is a casino and it’s going to take people’s money, but also some of those gambling losses will go to the state instead. Here’s what the above scan of the mailer says:

casinos by design are black holes. their primary purpose is to pull patrons into its gambling facilities and keep them inside so that they can suck money out of their wallets.
for example, similar promises mentioned in the article were also made to the residences of atlantic city a few decades ago. drive through or walk about atlantic city on foot and you’ll notice that this city has become a canyon of massive casino buildings. there is so few people on the streets. for those who’re on the streets, they’re either crossing over to the next casino or perhaps heading to the boardwalk. there is so little pedestrian traffic that would patronize any local businesses because all potential customers are sucked into the casinos.
on the matter of money, atlantic city again is an example. walk around the poorer areas. the public parks and even the boardwalk. you’ll notice that there isn’t anything that suggests that money is pouring into public places. some neighborhood roads don’t look like they’ve been maintained, the neighborhood parks are not maintained, and even the boardwalk towards the poorer section of the atlantic city is not maintained. someone is collecting billions of dollars in taxes from the casinos, but it’s certainly not benefiting the people to whom the casinos made their promises! casinos in philadelphia will not be any different. they will not benefit the local business and communities. also, like shopping malls, they’ll ruin existing “main street” businesses or cause it to be impossible to open one and keep it going.
