‘Daily News’ Has Some Choice Leads Today, Too

It wasn’t just the Inquirer who had excellent, well-written leads today. No, the Daily News did its part as well to make sure the stories of the day were introduced in the most ridiculous way.

For example, longtime high school sports writer Ted Silary does a nice job introducing this story about some high school shot putters who rescued a woman from a burning house.

This was a track meet with no ordinary highlight. The best performance, by far, did involve running and jumping and teamwork, though. Along with wonderful bravery.

Hey! That’s unfair to shot put competitors. When’s the last time a shot put highlight included running and jumping and teamwork?

There’s more, though. Damon C. Williams wonders today if a firefighter who died in 1986 is a hero.

If the definition of a hero includes serving in Vietnam, saving three children from an inferno and making the ultimate sacrifice, then fallen Firefighter Edward D. Friel qualifies.

Gee, I dunno. I kind of think you have to do more than that to be considered a true hero.

And, finally, let’s look at Dana DiFilippo’s lead about a drunk driver who crashed into a police station and the aforementioned shooting outside an anti-violence rally.

Here are two tales from the Book of Brainless Law-Breakers - both committed their crimes within handcuffing distance of police officers.

Oddly enough, I searched Book of Brainless Law-Breakers on Amazon and didn’t get any results. It’s a shame, I was hoping to find some more funny crime tales in it.
