Road To 10,000 Losses: Phillies Liveblog

Road to 10,000 Losses is a countdown to the Phillies’ 10,000th loss, coming sometime later this year. With a 5-4 loss to the Nationals yesterday, the Phillies stand at 9965 losses, only 35 away from 10,000. The Phils are playing the Washington Nationals in an afternoon game, and so it’s time for a short liveblog. I’ll try to do this for games when I can this year, since if I’m watching anyway, I might as well write about it.

1:08 - The Phillies score one in the first, but had Shane Victorino on third with one out and he didn’t score.

1:31 - Aaron Rowand, who’s playing so well we better trade him before he starts screwing up, hits a homer to make it 2-0 Phillies. It’s time for the contest to guess how the Phillies will blow this one. I’m thinking the Phils hit into two triple plays.

1:38 - Ryan Howard is out today. He’s not on the DL, but he’s going to be out for a few days. Between this and Brett Myers moving to the bullpen, my fantasy team is struggling. But, this is what I get for drafting Phillies players.

1:53 - First and second, two outs, Wes Helms coming up. How will he end the inning?

1:56 - If you had “ground to short” in the pool, you win.

2:02 - If you’re wondering, Ryan Howard was hurt running to first last night. Getting hurt while running is a Curt Schilling special. That’s appropriate, since Howard weights almost as much. All he needs is a blog.

2:12 - Carlos Ruiz double, Jamie Moyer single. First and third, 1 out, Jimmy Rollins up.

2:13 - Rollins grounds to first, Dimitri Young throws home and it’s a double play. See? When’s the last time we saw an inning end that way? Way to mix it up, Phillies.

2:31 - First and third, no outs. Triple play number one coming up.

2:41 - After Pat Burrell walked to load the bases, the Nationals changed pitchers and Greg Dobbs popped out. But, hey, one run gets in on a sac fly! A flyout ends it. Ehh.

2:57- Hey, now it’s 4-0 after Jimmy Rollins — or as Gary Matthews says, “J-Ro,” even though Jimmy’s nickname is J-Roll — knocks in Carlos Ruiz. Is it odd that the Phillies best pitcher this year could be a 44-year-old guy?

3:03 - It’s now 4-0 going into the bottom of the sixth. Jamie Moyer has given up two hits. I think when I expect the Phillies to do badly I don’t feel any better when they win, because I’m wondering the entire game how they’re going to screw it up.

3:09 - If you’re not watching, you just missed extended discussions of how hard Gary Matthews works on “Sarge’s Keystone Chrysler/Jeep/Whatever Keys To The Game” and “U Can’t Touch This” — originally referred to as “Can’t Touch That.” BASEBALL FEVER!

3:38 - Top of the ninth, Phillies still up 4-0. Jamie Moyer still has a two-hitter. What is going on?

3:47 - Ah, there we go. Moyer gives up two hits and a run to start the bottom of the ninth and he’s pulled for Tom Gordon.

3:53 - Okay, now it’s 4-1 Phillies and the bases are loaded with no outs. The Phillies are going to find a way to blow this.

3:57 - My friend: “My theory is the Phillies are trying for Greg Oden.” A sacrifice fly makes it 4-2.

3:59 - Groundout and it’s second and third with 2 outs. A single ties it.

4:02 - Hey, a strikeout to end it. The Phils are 4-10! Yeesh.

Sarge referring to Jimmy as “J-Ro” is an improvement over him calling him “J.R.” 592 times per broadcast.
