Michael Nutter Totally Has Street Cred

George Miller has been covering the mayor’s race for us for a while now, and today he has the best information of any of his articles yet.

He writes in PW this week about how Gov. Ed Rendell hasn’t endorsed any of the mayoral candidates. Basically, he has close ties with all of ‘em. He and Bob Brady used to watch the Eagles together, he’s worked with Dwight Evans since Evans became a state legislator, he worked with Tom Knox, as you may definitely know from his commercials. Heck, Rendell even knows Republican candidate Al Taubenberger.

But Chaka Fattah wins the award for getting the governor out and exercising.

Back in 1982, when Fattah was making a run at the state House, he jogged a 5-kilometer loop through the 192nd Legislative District with supporters, including then-Philadelphia district attorney Rendell.

That leaves Michael Nutter. Obviously, the ex-City Councilman worked with him while Rendell was mayor. But here’s a little bit of info about Nutter you might not have known:

Michael Nutter served as a driver and field man for Rendell during Rendell’s failed 1986 gubernatorial run.

“He has a very interesting personality,” says Nutter, who was then a young DJ nicknamed Mix Master Mike. “He’s an interesting person to spend an evening in the car with.”

So why was Nutter the Watermelon Man? Was Milton Street ever a Mix Master? I don’t think so.

Hell these guys are all rookies. If it wasn’t for me Ed Rendell would still be running errands for city committee. I had the distinct pleasure of being campaign manager for F. Emmett Fitzpatrick back in 1977 when Ed first ran for election. Imagine where we would be today if I wasn’t such a PUTZ.
