Bob Brady’s HELP!!!111 To Include Elephants
It’s been a while since Bob “HELP IS ON THE WAY!!!111” Brady made the announcement he was going to run for mayor, but since I just found said announcement on this website, I figured it was finally time to talk about it. I’m talking, of course, about the elephants.
While Bob Brady may have lost Marianne Bessey’s vote, I still wonder: Whose vote, exactly, is he trying to get with this “bring the elephants back to the zoo” campaign promise? Okay, let’s assume Bob Brady really does want the elephants back at the zoo. Personally, I think elephants are one of the more boring animals — give me some red pandas and lions, please! — but, hey, to each his own. But Bob Brady’s a longtime politician, a good politician, and so he wouldn’t say something in his announcement speech if it wasn’t, at some level, designed to gain him votes. Is there a disaffected group of Philadelphians who go around grumbling under their breath that there aren’t elephants at the zoo anymore? I know I’ve joked before about the Friends of Philly Zoo Elephants just being like 20 people or whatever, but I also think the group that really, really wants to keep the elephants at the zoo no matter how small their pen is is equally small, if not smaller. Right? Was anyone really upset the elephants are gone from the zoo? (Besides Bob Brady, I guess.) Is there a big elephant constituency I’m unaware of? Someone please clue me in here. he makes a good point, though. a world class city has elephants in its zoo. and philadelphia, with the oldest zoo in the country, should have elephants.
im still for nutter.
Although I volunteer at my local zoo and do actually enjoy seeing the elephants, I agree with D-Mac, give me red pandas any day. They are the cutest animals to grace this fine planet.
A “great city” recognizes that it is more important to respond humanely and decently to the suffering of these gentle, intelligent beasts than to entertain one’s grandchildren, no matter how cute.
It is not possible to keep elephants in the Philadelphia Zoo in a way that meets their biological and emotional needs. It really is that simple. Bringing them back would be an act of great cruelty and overweaning selfishness. Mr. Brady seems to have many good ideas for helping the city; let’s hope that he can be educated on this issue as well.
Any animal you have in a zoo needs to be in a climate, space and setting that “mimics” EXACTLY WHERE THEY CAME FROM…ANYTHING LESS IS JUST PLAIN CRUELTY.
Elephants need space…….and in an environment where they are not CONTROLLED BY MAN…BUT “CARED FOR” AND “LOVED”…YES “LOVED” …ELEPHANTS NEED TO “GIVE AND RECEIVE” LOVE FROM THEIR CARETAKERS AND ALLOWED TO BE IN A FAMILY UNIT AND “JUST” BE ELEPHANTS..
THE ZOO SITUATION FOR ELEPHANTS IS NO LONGER A GOOD THING….
TOO COLD OF A CLIMATE THE ELEPHANTS THEN ARE STUCK INDOORS ON “CONCRETE” …..IN CELLS…CAUSING THEIR LEGS AND FEET TO BECOME DISEASED FROM STANDING ON CONCRETE AND IN ONE PLACE TOO LONG….AND THEY CAN’T EVEN LIE DOWN TO TAKE THEIR DAILY NAP…WHICH THEY NEED FOR THEIR HEALTH.
I COULD GO ON AND ON…….BUT ANYONE WITH ONE OUNCE OF CARING FOR AN ELEPHANT WILL REALIZE…PUTTING THEM IN A ZOO…..IS JUST PLAIN ANIMAL ABUSE…
I HOPE THE DAY WILL SOON COME WHERE ALL ELEPHANTS ARE BANNED FROM ZOOS AND CIRCUSES AND ONLY FOUND IN ANIMAL SANCTUARIES..
RINGLING BROS. CIRCUS NEEDS TO BE CLOSED DOWN BESIDES EVERY OTHER CIRUCS THAT HAS ANIMALS…THEY LIVE IN HORRIBLE, ABUSIVE CONDITIONS…
Lynn Swann also promised to bring back the Philly Zoo elephants (Rendell did not make that promise, by the way) and look what happened to Swann….
The giraffes at our zoo have necks that are shorter than the necks of giraffes at other world class cities. How can we call ourself a world class city if we have the smallest giraffe necks?
Have you seen that one giraffe with the weird lump on its throat? They say it’s not dangerous or anything, but they don’t know what it is. HOW CAN WE LET THIS STAND!
We have the power, but do we have the right to deny captive elephants what is rightfully theirs, meaningful lives? I think not.
Congratulations on your award.

Elephants have been chosen as the “poster animal” for radical animal activists who want to use them as a tool to achieve their real goal - shutting down zoos. Arguing with them is like trying to teach a pig to sing - it just annoys the pig.
To Gentry -
So, have any of the zoos that sent their elephants away after pressure from activists or for other ethical reasons “shut down”? Typical AZA alarmist rhetoric.
At the rate elephants are dying in zoos, there won’t be any left in 50 years anyway unless more are stolen from the wild.
