Guild Accidentally Sends Out Parody Memo, Stops Short Of Saying Tierney Is Sending Them Into Mines Sans Canaries

The Newspaper Guild sent out a memo today urging members to vote yes on the new contract, but stops short of actually endorsing said contract.

It’s apparently penned by Diane Mastrull, Bargaining Committee Chair and PNI Unit Chair, and it lays out how the new contract is a slap in the face, but if they didn’t sign it, they’d destroy the papers (or something).

The problem, of course, is Citizen Tierney — shown on his yacht above and on his private island at right — Scrooge McDuck and Rich Uncle Pennybags (Actually, did you know they changed his name to Mr. Monopoly? How lame.):

It is a contract full of pain and insult. It is a contract that requires sacrifice and trust. It is a contract that Brian Tierney and the local investors should be ashamed of. As one spirit-crushing proposal after another came across the table from our owners, we seethed. [...]

We were insulted and angry, but we worked through that anger and focused on getting the best we could for you. If we let our anger consume us, we will destroy the papers, destroy jobs and destroy families.

To Brian Tierney and his wealthy friends, it will be a mere tax write-off. They’ll move on, chalk it up as a bad investment and lick their wounds on their yachts in the Caribbean. [be thankful I didn't try to Photoshop Tierney licking his wounds —ed.]

In the closing minutes of the contract negotiations, I told company negotiators to deliver this message to Brian Tierney: “This contract is something no amount of Tastykakes, soft pretzels or commemorative coins will make up for. On our ledger, he finds himself in the negative category when it comes to goodwill.”

Damn, guys, if the writing was like this every day in the paper, it’d be the new Mad magazine. I’d buy 10 copies every day!

Now That’s a Memo! [Daily Strike]
