The latest memo from the Newspaper Guild makes it appear that the workers are headed for a strike. Or maybe the current bargaining situation is currently all rainbows and gumdrops.

The Communications Workers Of America — the parent union of the Newspaper Guild — board has authorized a strike. (No surprise there.) But here’s the weird line:

Our local membership at a meeting attended by over half of our members voted - with only four negative votes - late last month to request the CWA board’s approval for a strike.

Wait, only half the members showed up? Really? Wow.

CWA Board approves Guild strike as bargaining continues

The Communications Workers of America executive board has authorized International President Larry Cohen to call a strike at The Inquirer andDaily News if the local bargaining committee believes talks have broken down and there is no alternative.

Local President Henry J. Holcomb was informed of the our parent union’s decision by James J. Short, CWA district vice president for Pennsylvania (District 13), and Linda K. Foley, the Guild’s international president. Holcomb received the news at a meeting in Short’s Center City office with Foley participating by phone from Washington.

“We will keep working and keep talking as long as we’re making progress. Though serious issues that would have a devastating impact on our membership remain unresolved, we are making progress,” Holcomb said as the bargaining committee, chaired by Diane Mastrull, prepared to meet with the management negotiators at noon.

The bargaining team worked until the mediator sent them home at 11:41 p.m. yesterday. It was back at work with the mediator at 8 a.m. today.
