The wait is over! After 4.6 billion years without gambling in Pennsylvania (during must of that time, admittedly, Pennsylvania did not “exist” per se), our fine Keystone State finally has legalized slot machines!
Yes, the Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs opened its doors at 10 a.m. yesterday, prompting a crowd of thousands to walk in its doors. Click past the jump to read just what went down with legalized Pennsylvania gambling, day one.
- Catherine Baker Knoll, the state’s lieutenant governor, was booed during her introductory speech. The Pocono Record reports a man yelled “C’mon, let’s go!” after two minutes of a “yay for gambling” speech from Baker Knoll.
- The casino has 1,100 slots (for now: 2,500 more are on their way), two bars, three restaurants. There’s two floors: one smoking, one nonsmoking. It is, naturally, open 24 hours a day.
- The Inquirer reports the owners of the casino are hoping for profits: “We hope to generate a reasonable return on our investment,” the casino’s president said.
- And, of course, the upshot of now having slots in Pennsylvania, as opposed to having to go to AC or elsewhere, from a resident in the Canadensis, Pa.: “Now when I gamble, the money is staying here.”

I guess that resident is resigned to the fact that pulling a small lever is complete chance and they will lose their money no matter what. But hey, at least they lose it here!
this slots parlor stuff is BS.. if you’re going to allow gambling which appeals to the AARP set, why not allow real gambling with cards and dice and roulette wheels that appeals to degenerate 20-somethings?
