Philadelphia Will Do

And You Thought The Ducks Were Annoying

KYW 1060 reports this morning of a new tourist attraction in Philadelphia: The Superbike.

Superbikes are run by the same people who run Super Ducks, and owner Alfred Krawitz said the Superbike is “a bicycle that holds seven passengers. One person drives it. It has a hydraulic braking system. It has a Porsche front end.”

City officials aren’t quite sure about the safety of these so-called “super” bicycles, but they’re not covered any city motor vehicle codes, so Krawitz went ahead and started selling rides on it. Councilman Frank DiCicco, naturally, wants to confiscate the bikes, perhaps so he can ride constituents around his district on them.

But, for now, Superbikes are here to stay. However, we do have a reprieve from at least one of the duck boats for a little while, as the article notes:

Meanwhile, the National Park Service has suspended Krawitz’s Superducks for seven days for aggressive solicitation.

Praise you, National Park Service.

Isn’t it illegal to bike on sidewalks in Philly? They could stop them using that law.

A little bit of research showed that they had a problem with these in New York:

Ahh, I never ever thought I’d be on the same side as the Ducks people! I think these bikes are a great idea. They don’t move slower than the horse and carriages, and they are less smelly, and don’t leave urine that corrodes the black top. Also, they will help Americans loose a few pounds perhaps. Remember, Independence park is a HISTORIC PARK not just the median in some highway… If people think things like this, the horse buggies, and even the Ducks are in the way then perhaps they should live in a city that has nothing for tourists to see and do. Yes, it is illegal to ride bikes on the sidewalk in Philly, and these things should NOT be on the sidewalk. It is legal to ride them in the street as long as the riders obey traffic laws. If people driving these things break traffic laws, then throw the book at ‘em. Otherwise, just chill out and enjoy another addition to our unique cityscape.
