People other than me can be offensive, too!

Via an alert reader and the Wikipedia page for Vanity license plates, I present to you the slyly offensive PA license plate:

If you’re confused, 343 is the number of fire fighters who died on 9/11. Ouch.

    OK I don’t get why that is offensive. Many firefighters and buffs have 343 memorialized in one way or another- it’s what we do.

    Some people could find that it trivializes the 343 people who died that day. From the Wikipedia talk page (yes, not really a great source, but shush): “I knew people who died and that really should be taken off the road and whoever got the plate should be tossed in the nearest FDNY firehouse where the guys have been told what the person had for their vanity plate. There is no excuse for this trivialization of those who died that day!”

    Oh yeah, please note that I don’t find it offensive. I just thought it was an effing strange way to memoralize (or trivialize, whatever) the 9/11 attacks.

    Not sure there is a defined Etiquette for this sort of thing… Offensive? maybe but likely the owner was just trying to be supportive.

    Nobody mentions whether this car had other memorial items such as a bumper sticker or an FDNY hat in the rear window. Maybe it is their way of saying “We will not forget the sacrifice that you brave men & women made on that horrible day!” I think it’s a bad thing to jump to conclusions such as, “This is offensive.”

    Like I said, I don’t know if the plate is all that offensive; I’m sure some people could take offense, though.

    Anyway, this has inspired me! Just wait ’til I get my CVLWR 560K license plate.

    I for one do not find this tag offensive in any way..i have seen some other custom plates around were i live and yes they were a firefighter’s personal vehicle.. 343 rest in peace fellow brothers
