Philadelphia Will Do

Sign of the times

022006i76.jpg Today in his “Consumer Watch” column, the Inquirer’s Jeff Gelles takes on the ill of everyone who’s ever driven on the Schuylkill Expressway: Traffic Bad road signs.

Bad road signs? Huh? Every time I’ve driven the Schuylkill, I’m stuck in so much traffic that I have plenty of time to read every road sign, billboard and deer carcass I slowly pass. His reasoning is fairly solid, though: There are plenty of horrible road signs, and now that the City of Philadelphia is telling people to call the Daily News if they have a problem, why not expand that to PennDOT as well? Plus, if it had been clearer that you couldn’t park at the southeast corner of 41st and Sansom when I was in college, I would have saved about $100 on parking tickets, which I could have spent on beer. And there are lots of misleading signs on area roads (I guess), so it makes sense to try to fix them.

Naturally, in this age of Internet/newspaper mashups, the paper asks its readers to post in its online forum with the worst of the road signs. (I smell series!) Frankly, this seems like more of a Daily News idea, but the Inky’s gotta keep up with the Internet! And the readers are so smart and in tune and hip and into this Internet thing that many of them are posting new threads about bad road signs rather than posting in the appropriate, already-made one.

But I digress. This is a good idea. I mean, my life really hasn’t been the same since they changed the South Street exit on the Schuylkill from “40″ to “32179B” or whatever it is now. And I went out and scooped out a clearly misleading sign that I think the Inquirer should clearly cleanse from the streets:

Best to read it every day. Pshaw. How misleading.

As a relative newcomer to the city, I would have to agree, nothing is marked well…I’ve done more laps around the airport than I can count…”oh look, Big Ben…”
