Sunday evening quarterback

It is Sunday night. The warm faux spring days of the last week have ceded to a cold, blustery weekend, sending my heater into overdrive and my heating bills into the triple digits.

I am typing at my laptop in my bathroom, sitting on the counter and looking at myself in the mirror. I do this sometimes, to spark the creative juices. My face may not launch 1,000 ships, but it might launch 1,000 words. I don’t really know why sitting on the bathroom counter with my legs up against a cabinet makes me write, but so far it’s been the best writing place in my apartment.


I am down this Sunday night, and not just because of the cold or the darkness or the return to work tomorrow. Things this night are rather normal. But I need a hug.

I had a happy childhood. My parents lavished attention on me as their only child. I had friends on my Northeast Philadelphia rowhome-lined street and I spent my life as any other normal city kid: playing stickball, trying to master video games, loitering at stores that would tolerate kids.

Of course, I was a nerd, too, and I wasn’t exactly BMOC. I was picked on my fair share. Nothing traumatic, really, like the stories I’ve heard from college friends or on cheesy after-school specials, but I was a gawky kid with crooked teeth and zits and a bad haircut who did well in school.

Possibly because of this, I liked to be alone. When friends weren’t around or at those times when I just really didn’t have any, I threw myself into books or Super Nintendo or early pathetic attempts at writing. (Sometimes, I’d combine them: I clearly remember writing a game recap of my 10-0 Flyers win over the Lightning in NHLPA ‘93. I wish I still had it.) I never really felt all that depressed.

Sometime after cutting my hair, getting some really good friends and going off to college, I began to hate being alone. And my freshman year of college was like anyone else’s freshman year, full of insecurities and uncertainness. I didn’t deal well with not drinking. I didn’t go out much. And I began to hate, hate, hate times when I was sitting in my room with nothing to do. I stopped reading. I certainly didn’t play video games. I did step up my writing, doing work for the school paper and finding out how much I enjoyed it.

I’ve pretty much dealt with strong depression since then. I’ve kept it under control with therapy and pills and all that good stuff. I’m sure it was a combination of leaving home, leaving friends and getting closer to the real world that brought all my depressive tendencies to the forefront. I’m okay now. But I still have these moments of anhedonia that tear my insides apart.

None of this is depression, per se, because it has a real cause, and an end, but I still don’t really know how to deal with it. But I’ve gotten to a point in my life where I am worried about being left alone, being forgotten, having everything fall apart all at once.

When I dated a girl at a different college my freshman year, I cried for hours after she left after a weekend stay. The same thing happened after I got back on the Amtrak train after a long holiday stay with a girlfriend a few years ago. But any time I hang out with old friends (from high school, college, wherever) at this point I spend the next day moping around.

And, this Sunday night, after old college friends have left after a weekend stay, I am lonely. This is odd, of course, since the just the sheer fact idea that old college friends spent time with me this weekend means they are not going to forget me anytime soon. Thanks to technology, I talk with several of them almost every day.

But I still can’t get this empty feeling out of my stomach.

It usually goes like this: I hang out with old friends I haven’t seen in a while, I have a great time, we part ways and I feel left out. We were talking about this at breakfast today before I saw almost everyone off. People, friends, can be such intense parts of your life, occupying all your time, almost becoming a part of your soul. And then, poof, goodbye, see you later, have a nice rest of your life.

With most of my college friends in New York and my high school friends scattered around the East Coast in places I just can’t quite seem to get to much anymore, I feel left out. It doesn’t matter if everyone leads boring, uneventful, bland-as-anything lives. (God knows I do.) But when I don’t know who so-and-sos new crush is or miss out on a trivia night, I’m missing something. A little part inside of me can’t let go.

And so, when I see people now, I try too hard to impress, to be funny, to make sure I’m always in their life. I don’t know if I embarrassed myself the last few times I’ve seen college friends to put me out of their lives, but I can’t keep the nagging thought out of my head: What if it has?

I realize this is silly. But when my intense desire to never, ever be left out spills into lonely nights, I get a little intense about it. And now that I’m so intense that I’ve been coming on too strong in (potential) relationships, absolutely wrecking any chance I might have had with the quickness of the answering machine scene in Swingers. Oh well.

I am scared. I don’t really know what to do about it other than sit on my countertop and write. I understand people in my life are going to come and go, but sometimes I wish it wasn’t that way. Or, really, all the time.

And, if the people I was with this weekend will take me in, is it alright if I come up, say, sometime in March? Even with all the pain it’s still worth it to see old friends.

    I don’t think just knowing you have friends is an issue. A great deal of my close friends from college relocated to Philadelphia, and I see them every week, and talk to most of them everyday, but it doesn’t keep me from feeling left behind whenever I’m alone, evenings especially. It just feels like the whole world, your close friends included, are out at some ultra glamourous location, having the best night of their lives, while you’re at home languishing on your couch with take out food and MTV reruns. In reality, they’re probably watching the same lame MTV shows as you for the thousandth time, but you can never buy into that. Thanks for sharing, and its comforting to know that this melancholy is not exclusive to me. I just hate the feeling that the world and my friends are moving on, and I’m staying static. Your essay was really moving, and it was awesome of you to put yourself out there like that. So much of what you wrote really resonated with my, and my current situation. Just hang in there, and know that things may seem dire a great deal of the time, especially on those lonely evenings, and its ok to be intense sometimes. Keep up the great work.

    Hi,
    It’s good to see someone talking about life with mental illness, it’s real and it haunts me too. Yes, I ruminate about what it would be like to be like people I know who seem so normal and happy. I’m fortunate that I can work and function fairly well, but I just sometimes wish things were different, but God Knows better.
