There’s a letter to the editor in today’s Metro that makes me laugh, for many, many reasons. First, the letter (you can also see a scan of the letter here):
Advertisement is an Absolut disgrace
For a long time I’ve admired a mural downtown (I’m not sure of the exact location but I think it is on 8th and Market streets). It was a painting of Dawn Staley. For some years now, this mural has been covered up with a picture of Benjamin Franklin wearing a pair of glasses that has frames in the shape of Absolut vodka bottles. What I don’t understand is how this city can let a painting of a positive Philadelphian become covered up by an alcohol advertisement. This is an absolut disgrace, and something needs to be done.
First, the obvious things: That Dawn Staley “mural,” I believe, was an advertisement for Reebok. And, well, I’m no historian, but as far as I’ve been told Mr. Franklin wasn’t quite anti-alcohol. (He was all for moderation, but still.)
Anyway, the real beauty of this letter is that, literally one minute after reading it, this press release hit my inbox:

Lift a pint to Philadelphia’s most famous citizen with Our Town’s most famous beer-drinker in the city’s oldest tavern. Joe Sixpack, Beer Reporter, invites Philadelphia beer lovers to McGillin’s Olde Ale House, to toast Benjamin Franklin on the occasion of his 300th birthday.
The Joe Sixpack Toast to Ben at McGillin’s Olde Ale House will feature a tribute to Franklin’s long-lasting impact on Philadelphia and its beer. The highlight of the event is a toast with two very special beers made by area brewers in Franklin’s honor. It is the only Franklin tercentenary event where both locally brewed ales will be served. Hearty appetizers paired with a selection of craft beers will be served.
Inventor, publisher, diplomat and signer of the Declaration of Independence, Franklin was also well known as a man about town in Colonial Philadelphia. And, he loved his beer – in fact, one of his best-known aphorisms is now the slogan of every beer aficionado: “Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.”
Now, as Philadelphia marks Franklin’s tercentenary, it’s appropriate that the city lifts a glass in his honor. What better to toast him with than Ben’s own beer?
Joe Sixpack’s toast to Ben will feature two Philadelphia-made beers that were based on a recipe Franklin wrote himself. The original recipe (see below), written sometime in the 18th century, includes molasses and “essence of spruce,” producing an usual but tasty, refreshing ale.
Poor Richard’s Tavern Spruce by Yards Brewing in the Kensington section of the city, is a faithful recreation of Franklin’s original recipe, brewed with molasses and an entire spruce tree. Poor Richard’s Tavern Spruce, available in kegs and distinctive blue bottles, is one of Yards’ Ales of the Revolution, along with Thomas Jefferson Tavern Ale and George Washington Tavern Porter.
Poor Richard’s Ale, by Iron Hill Brewery in North Wales, is the winning recipe in a national contest, sponsored by the Brewers Association, to develop a beer in Franklin’s honor. The recipe was created by brewer Tony Simmons of Brick Oven Brewing in Colorado, who assisted Iron Hill brewer Larry Horwitz in the production of the local version of the ale.
It’ll all take place at McGillin’s Olde Ale House, 1310 Drury St., between Chestnut & Sansom, 13th & Juniper, in Center City. McGillin’s, founded in 1860, is Philadelphia’s oldest continuously operating tavern. The taps have been flowing at McGillin’s since Abe Lincoln was elected president. And since then it has become like the fictional “Cheers,” where Philadelphians go for welcoming atmosphere, good food at reasonable prices, camaraderie and, of course, a large selection of regional beers on tap.
