Everybody in the club gettin’ tipsy I’m talking about AWOL, or alcohol without liquid, a machine that is pretty much what it says. AWOL is a machine that vaporizes alcohol and mixes it with oxygen — a 20 minute stay on the machine is worth a shot of distilled spirits. And the Pennsylvania legislature is considering banning the machine. (On a side note, am I just totally behind the times here? I’ve never heard of this product before the Pennsylvania legislature voted to ban it. Is it new? New-ish? Wikipedia tells me it was introduced to the United States in August 2004. Is that true?) Supposedly, the machine produces a “euphoric high” and avoids the calories of a regular drink. (Also, no hangovers.) Maybe. But it seems like you have to look like a total tool to even get on it, plus — 20 minutes for a shot? Uh, count me out. But, of course, it’s a thing young adults who don’t vote might do for fun so the Pennsylvania house has stepped in to try to ban it. I’m actually totally torn on this next story. I don’t know if it’s the coolest thing ever or a really stupid idea that only perpetually drunken frat boys would ever even think of doing.
That must be the work of an overly-bored, frat boy engineering student. Twenty minutes of fellating what looks like a futuristic hyperspace bong doesn’t sound like it’s worth the one shot.
Yes, by the end of writing this thing I decided it was most certainly the stupidest thing ever — there are better uses for my lungs, like breathing and albuterol — but I was too lazy/uncreative to go back and change my lede.

this is the first I’ve heard of the rate — probably a protection for businesses that would offer the thing, so that people don’t suck down a dozen drinks before the first one has hit them. but I have to agree, I’d rather slow-sip some scotch if I want consumption that slow…
Yeah, I remember when those came out last year and there were debates over whether they were legal because it’s not a drink and since its only purpose is to get one wasted, it seemed to enter more drug than alcohol territory. Either way, I agree with acm. I’m amazed anyway blows those things for just one shot.
