Indeed. How about them Eagles? Indeed, even the non-sports fan could smile at this ridiculous 20-17 win where everything ended up working out. Even T.O. got outcelebrated.
The Inquirer got it pretty good in their immediate post-game recap:
You simply had to see it to believe it.
And there have to be thousands of Eagles fans still rubbing their eyes over what transpired after Donovan McNabb threw a woeful fourth down pass incomplete with 3:37 left in the game and the Birds down by a 17-13 score.
But only minutes later, in one of the more remarkable touchdowns scored in team history, the Eagles stormed past the San Diego Chargers, 20-17, after Matt Ware returned a block field goal 65 yards for a go-ahead, shake-your-head, stupefying touchdown that gave the Birds an improbable win.
Hmm. That’s pretty good. But I don’t think you were dramatic enough, Inquirer. Here’s my take on the game:
The Philadelphia Eagles did something that hadn’t been done since a man stepped foot on the moon: they shocked this scribe out of his boots.
Yesterday the Eagles made perhaps the greatest play in the history of the franchise — nay, in the history of professional sports. Quentin Mikell blocked a field goal and Matt Ware ran 65 yards for the biggest touchdown of his career, his life — in fact, probably the most important thing Matt Ware will ever do in his feeble life.
The Eagles fans? Boy, they will be scratching their heads for hundreds of hours, perhaps for the rest of their natural lives. Would they ever see something worthy of being described as so “magnificent” or “amazing” ever again? In the words of this scribe: no.
Yesterday the Philadelphia Eagles accomplished in a 20-17 victory what no other moment in human history has ever done: they defeated San Diego, and they earned my respect.
Go Birds.
