Philadelphia Will Do

America’s next great city? Really? Us?

092205philly.jpg As we move out of the dreary (for the media) summer months, when magazines and newspapers are full of nothing but fluff and puppydogs, we readers are now more than excited to have… even more pointless fluff and “best of” issues!

However: we are also more than excited that National Geographic Traveler has named Philadelphia “America’s Next Great City.” Really. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; not New Philadelphia, Ohio or Philadelphia, Mississippi, or one of those other Philadelphias that come up when you’re looking for movie times.

I tried to find the issue at the local bookstores, but, alas, no dice. Subscribers have it, though — I was alerted by one last night but, uhm, forgot about it until now. Anyway, Carpathian Kitten Loss has more info on it, including this:

According to the article what San Francisco was in the 60’s, Miami in the 80’s and Seattle in the 90’s, Philly will be for this next decade. One of the best lines from a visitor speaking of Philly’s nightlife is “It’s no longer D.C. on a bad hair day.”

So, uhm, yay for Philadelphia!

I’m a big Philadelphia booster myself and had the pleasure of escorting the National Geographic Traveler reporter around my hood, the Italian Market area. But neither the Traveler nor the Times were the first to realize our growing hip-ness. In April ’04 the hipster-travel-guide ‘Lonely Planet’ published its first book about Philadelphia. I considered that a milestone, but it received absolutely no attention or press in Philly, (although other cities reviewed the book). Maybe we were still too insecure about our hip-ness at the time. I also met with the writer of the Lonely Planet guide (which is how the Traveler reporter found me.) I thought it was very classy of both pubs to invite an anarchist to show them around.
