Philadelphia Will Do

The $10 ride of death

Actual example of a bus, possibly of the Chinatown variety Recently two Chinatown buses headed from New York to Boston caught fire, which doesn’t surprise us, since they’re Chinatown buses and they’re the cheapest form of transportation known to man. Even if you walked from Philadelphia to New York you’d pay more, since you’d have to buy new shoes once you got there. (Note: Walking to New York is probably faster than riding the Chinatown bus.)

Anyway, New York senator Charles Schumer apparently has a girl in college, and, doggonit, she knows of this “Chinatown bus” and if there’s one thing politicians like to do, it’s talk about their families. (Family values are so in!) Money quote: “My daughter goes to college in Boston, and many of her friends ride these buses, and they said they were worried about them.”

Schumer’s daughter doesn’t ride the Chinatown bus, of course, she’s too good for that. But, hey, she knows people who do. And so Chuck is calling for tighter safety controls on the Chinatown buses, which would presumably include the Philly-to-N.Y. one.

With this, plus high gas prices, it can only mean higher fares for the same shitty service. Time to go back to the R7-to-N.J. Transit route, I suppose.

I paid the extra $5 to take the Peter Pan Bus from DC to New York, and on my way back on Sunday the 30th, RIGHT as I got back into DC I saw a Chinatown (”Today’s Bus” I think) charred on the highway, which blocked traffic and access to the ramp that spits you from rt 50 onto New York Ave. It looked like a missile hit it. I’m glad I took the Peter Pan bus. Does anybody know anything about what happened?? Ive been looking online and cant find out the details! Quite the Haunted Halloween Bus ride if you ask me.

I was on that bus! It was a New Century Travel — which after reading a press release from Schumer’s office is apparantly the worst regarding safety!!! I’ve been searching the web for stories about it, but haven’t found any either. But what I have found is a number of articles about the Boston/NYC Chinatown bus fires and such, which of course I wish I would have discovered earlier. The passenger stories from the Boston/NYC bus fire mimics our experience. We pulled over and all groaned because we thought we had a flat tire and were all frustrated because this came after we’d already made 3 stops on the way home — one of which was where the bus driver parked the bus in front of the service center at the gas station and did something to the back of the bus. I assumed aired up a leaking tire.

We were quite lucky I think because it seemed to take several minutes before the bus really caught on fire. People were even able to grab bags out from under the luggage stow. I jumped in w/ some passing motorists who pulled over and offered me a ride, just as the fire trucks were arriving, so I have no idea how much of the bus actually burned or any other details. From the time the bus pulled over, until I got back to my apt in DC only took about 30 or 35 mins. I never really got the chance to talk w/ any of the other passengers either. I tried to talk to a few people, but I think most were just in shock and noone really talked to anyone else that I saw.

I had thought about taking the Peter Pan bus, but had previously good luck w/ Apex and decided to save $10. You can bet that if I ever take a bus to NYC again it will be Peter Pan or Grey Hound. Never again will I take a Chinatown bus after all the articles I’ve now read.
